Hammer's Late Strike Leads D'Youville to First Conference Win

Box Score

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's soccer team grabbed their first conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats late by the final score of 1-0.

Pitt.-Greensburg was on the offensive first, recording two shots high and wide within the first 6:30 of play. Following the early attack, the D'Youville men took the pressure to the Bobcat defense. Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) nearly gave D'Youville the lead after lacing a shot off the crossbar. The freshman was a threat to the Greensburg defense constantly, recording four shots in the next 20 minutes following his near goal.

Both Marco Ciccarelli (Rochester, NY/Webster-Schroeder) and Brandon Pauly (Owego, NY/Owego) were able to get shots off later in the first half, but neither could break the scoreless tie. The two teams headed into the half tied at 0-0.

Both defenses held firm in the second half. The two teams had several chances each, but no one was able to break the scoring drought. In the last several minutes, Greensburg looked to take the lead with a shot that was saved by goalkeeper Peter Petruzzo (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and a corner kick, but neither transpired into a goal.

With 2:45 remaining in the game, the Spartans would finally break through to take the lead. Defender Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) collected a ball off a deflected cross and delivered a strike to the back of the Bobcat's net for the 1-0 lead. The team would hold firm for the remaining two minutes, winning their first game of the season by the final score of 1-0.

The D'Youville defense was outstanding all afternoon. Mike Lekanka (Newfane, NY/Newfane), Allan Wade (Lockport, NY/Starpoint), Pat Mann (Brighton, NY/Brighton) were all solid alongside Hammer, the game's only goal scorer. Bryce Humphrey (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) and Aweso Noor (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) were also outstanding in support.

In net, Petruzzo recorded his first career win and first career shutout making two saves. On offense, Sherman led the team with six shots, while Ciccarelli provided strong play in the midfield, adding two shots. Rehte Ru (Thailand Refugee Camp/Riverside) played a big role in the midfield as well.

The next game for the men comes on Wednesday, October 19th at 7:15pm as they host the Hilbert Hawks at Dobson Field.
