Box Score Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's volleyball player their first of four straight home games on Wednesday evening and lost to the visiting Houghton Highlanders by the final score of 3-0.
Houghton opened up the first set with a 4-0 lead over the Spartans, but D'Youville would overcome the deficit and tie the game at 10. The Highlanders would get on a roll and take a 19-13 lead, but again D'Youville would fight back to tie the set at 20 and then take the lead with a Megan Gawrys (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) service ace. Following a Houghton timeout, the Highlanders would collect themselves and score 5 unanswered points, winning the first set 25-21.
In the second set, the two teams would play to an 8-8 tie until the Highlanders took over. Houghton outscored the Spartans 14-2 down the stretch and would eventually take the set 25-14. The third set would begin much the same as the second, with the two teams tied at 9 and then 14. However, Houghton would again get a head of steam and take over all the way to the end, winning the third set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
Sophomore Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City) and freshman Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy) tied for the team high in kills with 6. Juniors Megan McCarthy (Eden, NY/Eden) and Kaylee Stewart (Wilson, NY/Wilson) each had 3 kills. Gawrys, McCarthy and Savannah Brayton (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) all had 2 service aces.
Kaitlyn Grimm (Erie, PA/Iroquois) had a team high 9 digs, followed by Schneider with 7 and Brayton with 6. Fleming led the team with 3 total bocks in the match.
The next game for the women will be next Tuesday, October 6th at home against AMCC rival Medaille.
