Lions Force Winner Take All With Win Over Spartans

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville Softball Team suffered their first loss of the AMCC Playoffs to the Penn State-Behrend Lions Sunday morning by the score of 2-1, forcing a deciding second game.

D'Youville would immediately challenge for the lead as they put runners on base with 2 outs. Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) walked, followed by a ground-rule double from Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) that would have scored DeVantier if it hadn't bounced over the fence. However, both runners were stranded on base and the first inning ended scoreless.

Turek would again make a difference in the fourth inning, starting off the bottom half of the inning with a single up the middle. Senior Alison Hall (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) laid down a sac-bunt, moving Turek into scoring position. Next up was MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) then singled and Turek rounded third heading to home, but a strong throw from the Behrend center fielder got Hannah out at home. Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) then came to bat and moved MacKenzie from second to third, but both runners would be left on base.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Lions scored 2 runs to take a 2-0 lead. D'Youville would get a run back in the bottom of the inning. Turek once again started off the inning with a single. Hall then again bunted Turek over to second but reached first safely. Kehlenbeck then came to bat and this time made sure that Turek would score by hitting a ground-rule double. However, the ground-rule double stopped Hall from scoring the game-tying run and from Kehlenbeck reaching third, and the inning ended with both runners stranded on base.

A leadoff single from Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) would start the inning, followed by walks to Turek and Hall to load the bases with 2 outs. The Lions would get out of the jam and force a winner take all championship game by winning the game 2-1.

Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) was excellent, going 7 innings and allowing 2 runs while striking out 6. Hannah Turek led the offense with 1 run and 3 hits. MacKenzie Kehlenbeck drove in the game's only run and also had 2 hits.
