Box Score 2 Houghton, NY – The D'Youville Baseball Team split their doubleheader against Keuka College on Tuesday, losing their first game 9-1 and defeating the Wolfpack 4-0 in the second game.
Neither team scored in the first inning of game one, but the second inning was a different story. D'Youville led off the inning with a walk to Travis Macrides (Malius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius). After being moved to second on a groundout, Justin Losowski (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) singled to bring in Macrides for the game's first run. Losowski's RBI would be the only run of the first inning for the Spartans, who led 1-0 after an inning and a half.
Keuka would answer back in the bottom of the inning, scoring 1 run. In the third and fourth innings, the Wolfpack would score 4 total runs to extend their lead to 5-1. Four more runs would be added to the Keuka lead in the fifth, and the team would go on to win by the final of 9-1.
Losowski led the team with 2 hits and drove in the only run. Macrides earned the only walk of the game and scored the team's only run. Anthony Oliveri (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) picked up the loss in game one. Steve Vik (Hopkins, SC/Lower Richland) and Brian Mattina-Chmiel (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) both saw action in relief of Oliveri. Mattina-Chmiel allowed no runs and 2 hits in 2 innings of relief.
For game two, Nick Stimpfel (Aquebogue, NY/Riverhead) took the mound for the Spartans. In two innings of work, Stimpfel allowed no runs on 1 hit. In the third inning, Stimpfel lead off with a walk. Matt Wendling (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) then singled to advance Stimpfel to second. Kyle Taylor (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) then came to the plate and singled, driving in Stimpfel for the first run of the game.
The Spartans would add to their 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Eric Simoncelli (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) blasted a triple to begin the inning. Travis Macrides was the next batter, who singled to bring Simoncelli home. After being moved over to second on a groundout, Stimpfel singled to bring home Macrides. Following a pitching change, Wendling singled to move Stimpfel into scoring position. Leadoff hitter Thomas Brummer (Amherst, NY/St. Joe's) then stepped to the plate, singling and scoring Stimpfel.
Pitcher Dan Fox (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) allowed 2 hits and no runs after Stimpfel's 2 innings of work and picked up the win in the 4-0 defeat of the Wolfpack.
Fox pitched 5 innings, striking out 2 for his first win of the season. Brummer led the team with 4 hits in the leadoff spot, driving in 1 run. Simoncelli, Macrides and Stimpfel all accounted for RBIs, and Stimpfel scored 2 runs himself.
