Box Score 2 West Seneca, NY – Monday marked the end of the 2015 season for the D'Youville Baseball Team as they faced off against the Penn State-Behrend Lions and were defeated by the scores of 15-1 in game one and 5-2 in game 2.
Penn State-Behrend got on the board immediately, homering on the very first pitch of the game. They would tack on another run in the first inning, followed by 4 additional runs in the second and three more in the third to take a 9-0 lead. D'Youville would get on the board in the bottom of the third. Eric Simoncelli (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) doubled with 2 outs in the inning, followed by a walk to Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius). Nick Ivanoff (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) then singled to bring home Simoncelli.
D'Youville's lone run would ensure they weren't shutout, but the team would lose to the Lions by the score of 12-1. Jordan Iannarelli (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) picked up his first loss of the season. Brian Mattina-Chmiel (Grand Island, NY/Canisius) saw time in relief, followed by Jeff Turner (Lackawanna, NY/Lackawanna) to close out the game.
The game would be much closer in game two. Behrend would score 2 runs each in the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead. Kyle Taylor (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk. Up next, Simoncelli singled, advancing Taylor to second. Macrides then came to the plate and singled, scoring Taylor and advancing Simoncelli into scoring position. Bringing in his second run of the day during the next at-bat was Ivanoff, who brought Simoncelli home to cut the deficit to 4-2.
D'Youville would be unable to score another run after Penn State added another run in the top of the eighth, defeating the Spartans by the score of 5-2. Turner went back to work in game two, pitching 9 innings for his first complete game of the season. Ivanoff had 2 RBIs on the day, followed by Macrides with 1.
