Solid Defense Not Enough To Give Spartans A Victory Against Mounties

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

West Seneca, NY – Saturday afternoon marked the first home game of the season for the D'Youville Baseball Team and the Mount Aloysius Mounties played spoilers as they defeated the Spartans by the final scores of 3-0 in game one and 8-6 in game two.

Mount Aloysius blanked the Spartans in game one, despite some great pitching and defense from D'Youville. Jordan Iannarelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) came in relief of Dan Fox (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and didn't allow a run and only allowed 1 hit in 3.1 innings pitched. Freshman Nick Stimpfel (Aquebogue, NY/Riverhead) made several great plays on defense to keep numerous Mounties' batters off the base-paths.

Game two was highlighted by the first 2 homeruns of the season for D'Youville. Eric Simoncelli (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) swung at the first pitch he saw and drove it over the fence for his first homerun of the season. However, Mount Aloysius would would get a homerun of their own in the top of the second and add another run to tie the game at 2.

In the bottom of the fifth, Nick Ivanoff (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) singled to bring up Kyle Taylor (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster). Coming off a complete game win on Thursday, Taylor this time did his damage at the plate by doubling and scoring Ivanoff to give the team a lead. Thomas Brummer (Amherst, NY/St. Joe's) then switched places with Taylor by doubling and bringing him home to make the score 4-2. The Mounties would again answer in the top half of the following inning by hitting a 3-run homerun to take a 5-4 lead.

D'Youville would tie the game in the bottom of the sixth by Louis Reynolds (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) reaching first on error and Stimpfel scoring from second. Mount Aloysius would take back the lead in the top of the seventh, but the Spartans second homerun of the game would tie the game again. After collecting an RBI in the fifth, Brummer stepped into the batter's box and belted a solo homer, the first of his collegiate career.

The Mounties would blast a 2-run homerun in the top of the tenth inning and win the game with those 2 runs by the final score of 8-6.

Nick Ivanoff picked up the loss in relief. In two innings of work, Brian Grabiec (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) allowed 1 run and struck out 2. With 2 RBIs and a homerun each, Thomas Brummer and Eric Simoncelli led the way on offense for D'Youville. Brummer led the team with 3 hits, followed by Stimpfel and Taylor with 2 each.

Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) played incredible defense both games at shortstop, with Simoncelli and Matt Wendling (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) making big plays as well.

The Spartans will play their next doubleheader on the road as they head to Pitt.-Bradford Tuesday to play the Bobcats at 2/4pm.
