Box Score Elmira, NY – Carrying over their offense from their 7-4 game one win, the D'Youville Baseball Team completed their first doubleheader sweep of the season, defeating the Elmira Soaring Eagles in game two by the final of 15-4.
Elmira was a first team to put runs on the board, scoring 2 runs in the first inning. The Spartans would answer back in the second inning, scoring 3 runs. Nick Ivanoff (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) stepped up with bases loaded and hit a sac-fly to right field, bringing home Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius). Two more runs would be brought in by Thomas Brummer (Amherst, NY/St. Joe's) as Jordan Iannarelli (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and Chris Ferril (Buffalo, NY/DaVinci) crossed the plate.
D'Youville would add to the 3-2 lead in the third and fourth innings thanks to the two big bats from game one. Eric Simoncelli (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) began the third with a double and would be driven in by Louis Reynolds (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame). In the fourth, Simoncelli was once again up to bat with the bases loaded and drove in Ivanoff from third after being hit by a pitch. Brummer scored during the next at-bat on a wild pitch. Reynolds then loaded the bases with a bunt. Macrides stepped into the box, doubling home Simoncelli and Matt Wendling (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale). The inning's final run came from the bat of Iannarelli, who scored Reynolds with a single.
With a 9-2 lead, the Spartans added even more insurance. D'Youville again had the bases loaded in the fifth. With 1 RBI already, Reynolds came up to bat and brought in two more runs scoring Wendling and Brummer. Two more runs were driven in by Macrides on a double, with Nick Stimpfel (Aquebogue, NY/Riverhead) and Reynolds crossing the plate. The Soaring Eagles would score a run in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 13-3 D'Youville.
Elmira scored a fourth run in the bottom of the sixth. D'Youville would answer back in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded yet again for the freshman Reynolds. He would hit into a fielder's choice but score Wendling from third. The final run of the game for the Spartans would be scored on a wild pitch as Simoncelli crossed the plate.
D'Youville would win the game by the final score of 15-4, with Reynolds leading the way on offense for the second straight game. Louis and Travis Macrides would tie for the team lead with 4 RBIs each. Both freshmen would get 3 hits and score a run each. Thomas Brummer would drive in 2 runs and earn 2 walks in the game.
For the second straight game, a D'Youville pitcher would go the distance. Brian Mattina-Chmiel (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) went 7 innings, allowing 1 earned run and struck out 3 for his first win of the season.
The Spartans will play at home on Saturday against Mount Aloysius at 1 and 3:30pm.
