Baseball Continues to Hit As They Sweep Elmira: Part 1

Box Score

Elmira, NY – Following their 16 run output on Tuesday, the D'Youville Baseball Team continued to hit by defeating the Elmira Soaring Eagles in game one by the final score of 7-4 and completing the sweep in game two by the final of 15-4.

The Spartans wasted no time getting the board in the first inning, scoring 3 runs. Leading off the game was Jordan Iannarelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park), who was hit by a pitch to get on first. The next batter, Thomas Brummer (Amherst, NY/St. Joe's) got on with a walk and moved Iannarelli to second. Matt Wendling (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) hit into a fielder's choice and Brummer was out at second, but Wendling got to second during the next at-bat with a stolen base.

The team's leading RBI man, Eric Simoncelli (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) extended his team lead and doubled in Iannarelli and Wendling to give the team a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Simoncelli advanced into better scoring position and stole third. Freshman Louis Reynolds (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) was up next and singled to bring home Simoncelli and made the score 3-0.

In the bottom half of the inning, Elmira would score 2 runs to cut their deficit to 1. With the bases loaded, Simoncelli came to bat again and picked up his third RBI of the game by drawing a walk, bringing home Chris Ferril (Buffalo, NY/DaVinci) from third.

Elmira would score 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 4. No runs would be scored until the ninth inning, when D'Youville broke open the game and would make it theirs.

Brummer would lead off the ninth with a single up the middle. As he did for most of the game, Simoncelli would reach base, this time on a single. Both baserunners would advance a base on a passed ball. A walk to Nick Stimpfel (Aquebogue, NY/Riverhead) would load the bases for Reynolds who delivered as he did in the first inning. Reynolds would single, bringing home the winning run in Brummer and Simoncelli as well. Two at-bats later, Nick Ivanoff (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) drove in Stimpfel for the seventh run of the game.

D'Youville would win the game with the final score of 7-4 behind the bats of Simoncelli and Reynolds. Each of the two sluggers drove in 3 runs, with Simoncelli scoring 2 runs himself. He also led the team with 3 hits. Six different players for the Spartans scored a run.

Kyle Taylor (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) picked up his first win of the season. Taylor pitched a complete game, allowing 2 earned runs and striking out 3 in 9 innings.
