Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Buffalo, NY – Tuesday afternoon was a pitcher's duel at the D'Youville Athletic Complex as both games between the Spartans and the Penn State-Behrend Lions went to extra innings as the Lions won game one 1-0 in 10 innings and D'Youville took game two 2-1 in 8 innings.
The Spartans threated in the bottom half of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Lydia Monn (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) led off the inning with a single. Amanda Drake (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) was hit by a pitch to reach first, and Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) flied out to center, moving Monin to third. Drake then stole second and D'Youville had runners on second and third with 1 out. Despite the great scoring position, the Spartans couldn't bring home a run in the first.
Over the next 4 innings, the two teams would combine for 3 hits. Behrend had a runner on third with 2 outs in the top of the ninth inning, but it was to no avail. In the top of the tenth with a runner on third, the Penn State pitcher helped her own cause and drove in the first runner of the game.
In the bottom of the inning, the Spartans started off with a runner on second. Ashley Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) grounded to third, moving Jessica Banning (Amherst, NY/Amherst) to third. D'Youville failed to bring Banning home from third and would lose the game by the final score of 1-0.
Junior Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) pitched a gem but picked up a loss, going 10 innings and striking out 4. Lydia Monin had a team high 2 hits.
In game two, the story was much of the same. The first run of the game came from Behrend in the top of the third. D'Youville's bats again would struggle until the bottom of the sixth inning. Kalie McHenry singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. Amanda Drake would come up 2 batters later and bring home McHenry with a double, tying the score at 1.
Both pitchers would continue to deal until the bottom of the eighth. Ashley Colan started off the inning with a walk. McHenry then singled, advancing Colan to second. Monin then came to bat, singling and moving both runners up a base. Drake then stepped into the box and showed her patience, coaxing a walk from the Behrend pitcher and brought home the winning run. D'Youville would win the game by the final 2-1.
Somehow outdoing herself from game one, McHenry pitched again in game two and went 8 strong innings, striking out 4 and allowing 1 run. She also had 2 hits to lead the team. Amanda Drake had both RBIs for the team, which were the game-tying and game-winning runs.
The next doubleheader for D'Youville comes at home on Thursday, April 16th against Keuka College at 3/5pm.
