Men's Volleyball Sees Season Come to End In Championship Game

Box Score

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville Men's Volleyball Team saw their season come to an end Sunday afternoon at the hands of cross-town rival Medaille in the NEAC Championship game by the final score of 3-0.

In the first set, the Mavericks took the lead early and never looked back. Trailing 3-2 would be the closest D'Youville would get to Medaille in the set, as the Mavericks would go on a series of at least 3 unanswered points four different times. Medaille would take the first set 25-13.

D'Youville would hold their own to begin the second set. Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) tied the game at 7 early on, but Medaille would pull away again. A 20-12 lead would be opened up by Medaille and they would eventually take the set 25-17.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, the match wouldn't turnaround in their favor in the third set. The team trailed 12-8 to the Mavericks before Medaille went on a 13-6 run and ended D'Youville's title aspirations in the third set by the final score of 25-16.

Brett Cawthorn led the team in kills with 9 and digs with 10. The team leader in assists, Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis), had 20 and added in 4 digs. Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) accounted for 7 kills. Freshman Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) had 3 kills and 3 digs, while Collin McMahon (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) added a dig.

Seniors Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY/Eden), Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) and Alex Johnson (Clarence, NY/Clarence) all saw their careers as Spartans come to and end Sunday. Goedtel had 2 kills and 2 digs, while Singer was third on the team with 5 kills. Johnson was second in the digs category with 5.

The men ended their first season in the NEAC with an 11-3 record in conference. D'Youville earned the second overall seed in the NEAC Playoffs after finishing the regular season with that 11-3 record, and their season was ended by Medaille in the championship game
