Box Score 2 Pittsburgh, PA - The D'Youville Baseball Team was lost big on Sunday as they fell to the host La Roche Redhawks 13-0 and 33-0 in an afternoon doubleheader.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Spartans put runners on base, but failed to have one of those runners cross the plate. La Roche scored 5 runs in the first 3 innings of the game, but exploded for 8 runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Redhawks would win the game by the final score 13-0.
Matt Wendling (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and Louis Reynolds (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) led the team with 2 hits each. Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) earned the only walk for the Spartans in the game. Nick Stimpfel (Aquebogue, NY/Riverhead) picked up the loss in the game.
The second game of the doubleheader didn't get much better for the Spartans.
La Roche quickly showed their dominance by scoring 7 runs in the first inning. Their offense didn't let up scoring a run in all 9 innings of the game, including 10 in the fourth inning. D'Youville mustered 4 hits in the game, but were no match for the high powered Redhawk offense who defeated the Spartans by the final score of 33-0.
Eric Simoncelli (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg), Kyle Taylor (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale), Mike Calandra (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) and Wendling picked up the 4 hits. Anthony Oliveri (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) was the losing pitcher in the contest.
The Spartans next game at home on Tuesday, March 31st against Penn State-Behrend, weather pending.
