Spartans Get Back on Track With Sunday Win

Buffalo, NY - Entering Sunday with a 5 match losing streak, the D'Youville Men's Volleyball Team got back in the win column to start their day by defeating the Lancaster Bible Chargers by the final score of 3-0.

Lancaster Bible held an early lead over D'Youville, 4-1. Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) led the team back into the game, recording a kill and 2 serves resulting in points for the Spartans. Retaking the lead at 11-10, the Chargers couldn't hold off the Spartans as they took a 2 point lead after 3 unanswered points. Scoring 3 unanswered themselves, Lancaster Bible closed the score to 18-16 to trail by 2. However, the Spartans would close out the set with a kill from Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) by the score of 25-21.

In the second set, Collin McMahon (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) got the team off to an early role. McMahon's first 5 serves of the set gave D'Youville a 5-0 lead, and McMahon would also dished out assists to Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) and Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale). With an 11-4 lead, Lancaster Bible charged back with 5 unanswered points. James Seiger (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) helped get the team back on the right track with 2 straight points, including 1 service ace. The Spartans would hold off a late Charger run, winning the set 25-20.

Looking to finish the match in 3 sets, D'Youville jumped out to an early 7-4 lead. Lancaster Bible closed the score to 8-6 and then 9-8, fighting to keep the match alive. The Spartans would outscore the Chargers 10-4 in the next several minutes, taking control of the game and finishing off the Chargers in 3 sets with the final score of 25-20.

Tetreault was the team leader in both kills and digs with 11 each. Busha was second on the team with 7 kills as well as 7 assists. McMahon had a team high 17 assists. Freshmen Kevin Kelly (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and Logan Krass (Oswego, NY/Oswego) both tallied 3 kills. Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY/Eden) had 2 kills and 4 digs, with Alex Johnson (Lancaster, NY/Clarence) ranking second on the team with 9 digs. Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) also had 3 kills and 3 digs.

The next match for the men comes on Friday, April 3rd at 4:30pm against Nazareth at Elmira.
