Medaille Defeats D'Youville In Second Half of Doubleheader

Box Score

Houghton, NY – After winning their first game of the doubleheader 11-4 on Wednesday, the Medaille Mavericks earned redemption in the second game by defeating the D'Youville Baseball Team by the final score of 13-6.

Medaille scored 2 runs in the bottom of the first inning to hold a 2-0 lead over the Spartans. Neither team would score a run in the second inning as Medaille took their lead into the third.

D'Youville would put their first runs on the board in the third. Jordan Iannarelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) was hit by a pitch, and was moved over to second from a Kyle Taylor (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) bunt single. Matt Wendling (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) was the next batter up, who also bunted for a single, moving both runners over. Jason Hart (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) then came to bat, grounding out to the second baseman, but drove in Iannarelli from third and put both runners in scoring position. Nick Ivanoff (Scranton, PA/West Scranton), the next batter, would follow Hart's lead and score Taylor on a groundout to second. The Spartans would end their half inning with the game tied at 2.

In the bottom of the third, Medaille would get a run back retake the lead 3-2. No runs would be scored in the fourth inning but D'Youville would tie the game again in the fifth. Eric Simoncelli (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) brought in Wendling from third to tie the game at 3. However, the Mavericks would once again take over the lead in the bottom half of the fifth with a pair of runs.

Iannarelli would cut the Maverick lead in the sixth as the result of a sac fly, scoring Louis Reynolds (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) from third. A walk and stolen base from Taylor got him in scoring position, which gave Wendling the opportunity to bring him around the bases and tying the ball game at 5. However, Medaille would break the game open in the bottom half of the sixth, scoring 4 runs.

The Mavericks would add another 4 runs in the seventh inning as a cushion and go on to win the game by the final score of 13-6.

Ivanoff would pick up the loss in the second half of the doubleheader. The freshman pitched 5.2 innings, giving up 8 runs and walking 6. Steve Vik (Hopkins, SC/Lower Richard), Anthony Oliveri (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) and Chris Ferril (Buffalo, NY/DaVinci) all made relief appearances.

Wendling had a good day at the plate, accounting for a team high 3 hits. Taylor recorded 3 runs to lead the team. All 6 RBIs came from 6 different Spartan batters, including 1 from Thomas Brummer (Amherst, NY/St. Joe's), who pinched hit.

The next game for the Spartans is Saturday, March 28th at La Roche. The doubleheader begins at 1pm.
