Box Score Houghton, NY – The D'Youville Baseball Team opened up their conference schedule on Wednesday morning as they played the Medaille Mavericks at Houghton College, splitting the doubleheader by winning the first game 11-4 and losing in the second game 13-6.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the offense got out to a quick start. Matt Wendling (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) led off the game with a walk. Jason Hart (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) advanced Wendling to second on a fielder's choice bunt. The next batter, Eric Simoncelli (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg), reached on a throwing error to load the bases and advancing both runners. Mike Calandra (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville) came up to bat, reaching on a fielder's choice but scored Wendling from third. Medaille wouldn't score in the bottom of the inning, giving D'Youville the 1-0 lead.
The Spartans threated in the second, with Jordan Iannarelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) reaching base along with Wendling, who singled and stole second. Despite the two baserunners, the team wouldn't cross the plate.
D'Youville's bats continued to rake in the third inning. Nick Ivanoff (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) started off the inning with a single. Simoncelli came up to bat, reaching on an error by the Medaille third baseman, scoring Ivanoff. Calandra laid down a sac bunt to move Simoncelli to second. Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) belted a triple to left-center, scoring Simoncelli and putting himself in scoring position. Yet another freshman, Louis Reynold (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) came up to bat after Macrides and scored him from third on a single to center. The Spartans would end the inning up 4-0 over the Mavs.
After a scoreless fourth inning, D'Youville would once again show their offensive prowess. With two outs in the inning, Iannarelli tripled. Kyle Taylor (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) then singled, scoring Iannarelli from third. Taylor then scored a run after Wendling drove him in on a double. The inning would end with D'Youville increasing their lead to 6-0.
The two teams would trade runs in the sixth. Simoncelli led off the inning with a walk and then stole second. He was called out on a fielder's choice that put Calandra on second. Reynolds would come to bat and record another RBI after driving in Calandra with a double. In the bottom half of the inning, Medaille would put their first run on the board to trail 7-1.
D'Youville's commanding lead was extended in the seventh with 4 additional runs. With Taylor on first, Wendling on second, Hart walked to load the bases. Ivanoff hit into a fielder's choice and Taylor was called out at home. Calandra stepped into the box and picked up 2 RBIs, scoring Wendling and Hart. Macrides walked to load the bases yet again, and Reynolds singled, scoring Ivanoff and Calandra.
The Mavericks would score 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it wouldn't be nearly enough as the Spartans would win the first game in dominating fashion, 11-4.
Dan Fox (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) picked up his first win of the season, pitching 6.1 innings, striking out 2 Mavericks and allowing 3 runs. Jeff Turner (Lackawanna, NY/Lackawanna) came in for 2/3 inning of work in relief.
The entire D'Youville lineup played well in the game. Wendling and Reynolds shared the team lead with 3 hits. Reynolds had a team high 4 RBIs, with Calandra picking up 3. Wendling, Ivanoff and Calandra all accounted for 2 runs each. Every D'Youville batter reached base in the game via hit or walk.
