Baseball Ends Weekend In Maryland With A Pair of Loses

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Chestertown, MD - The D'Youville Baseball Team hit the road once again Sunday, playing a doubleheader against Washington College and losing both games 9-1 and 10-1.

Washington opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning after D'Youville failed to record a hit in the top half of the inning. Two Shoremen runners crossed the plate in the inning to give the team a 2-0 lead over the visiting Spartans.

In the second inning, Nick Ivanoff (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) began the inning with a leadoff single to center. Fellow freshman Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) earned a walk to advance Ivanoff to second with no outs. After a Jason Hart (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) walk, the bases were loaded with 1 out, but the Spartans couldn't capitalize on the opportunity and left the bases loaded to end their half of the inning. Washington would score another run in the second to extend their lead to 3-0 after two.

The Spartans again loaded the bases in the third with only one out, but failed again to get a run across the plate. Pitcher Anthony Oliveri (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) got out of the third inning without giving up a hit or run, keeping the score 3-0 Shoremen.

In the fourth inning, D'Youville again loaded the bases with 1 out after Hart, Matt Wendling (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and Jordan Iannarelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) all reached base. Eric Simoncelli (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) hit a sac fly to left field, driving in Hart for D'Youville's first run. The Shoremen would answer in the bottom half of the inning, scoring 4 more runs to make the game 7-1.

D'Youville would fail to score a run for the remainder of the game, while Washington added a run in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to win the game by the final score of 9-1.

Ivanoff led the team in hits for the first game with 2, while Simoncelli drove in the team's only run in Hart. Oliveri picked up the loss in 3.2 innings of work, allowing 6 earned runs and striking out 2.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Spartans faced a similar result.

Ivanoff continued to keep his hot bat going, starting off the game with a single. After being moved over to third from a Hart bunt and Simoncelli single, Mike Calandra (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) grounded out to the shortstop, driving in Ivanoff for the Spartans first run. The Shoremen failed to score a run in their half of the inning, giving D'Youville the lead after the first inning.

Despite their early lead, the Spartans would lose control of the game. Scoring 2 runs in bottom of the second and fifth innings along with 6 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Shoremen would win the second game by a wide margin with the final score of 10-1.

The Spartans would threaten in the top of the sixth inning, loading the bases with 2 outs only to leave all three runners on base.

Ivanoff's hot bat tied fellow freshman Macrides for the team lead in hits with 2 for the game. Ivanoff also accounted for the team's only run. Calandra drove in Ivanoff to pick up the team's only RBI. Nick Stimpfel (Aquebogue, NY/Riverhead) was given the loss, pitching 5 innings and giving up 4 runs.

The Spartans will next play on Tuesday, March 24th at Houghton. The doubleheader will begin at 1pm with the second game scheduled to begin at 3:30pm.
