Box Score Erie, PA – The D'Youville men's soccer team saw their playoff hopes dwindle following their 5-0 defeat to the host Penn State-Behrend Lions on Wednesday evening.
Behrend put pressure on the Spartan defense early and often, forcing goalkeeper Brett Matthews (Angola, NY/Lake Shore) to make 2 saves in the first 2 minutes. Penn State continued to keep the pressure up until the D'Youville defense cracked, scoring an own goal in the 10th minute and gave the Lions a 1-0 lead.
Just 6 minutes later Behrend increased their lead to 2-0 and then in the 22nd minute the Lions chipped in with another goal to build their lead to 3-0. D'Youville would fail to create much offense in the first half and would trail 3-0 at halftime.
The second half would be much of the same as the first half. In the 57th minute, Behrend added another goal to their lead over the Spartans to extend it to 4-0. To cap their scoring spree, the Lions scored in the 80th minute and won by the final score of 5-0.
Nick Johnson (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) recorded the only shot of the game for the Spartans. Matthews made 12 saves over his 90 minutes played.
The men will play again this weekend on Saturday, October 24th at 1pm against Franciscan.
