Box Score Altoona, PA – The D'Youville men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to the Penn State-Altoona Lions Saturday afternoon in their fourth conference game of the season.
D'Youville's first shot of the game came off the foot of Patrick Mann (Brighton, NY/Brighton) in the 17th minute, but Mann's shot would miss wide left of the goal to keep the score 0-0. Altoona would hold the shooting lead up to the 33rd minute, where the Lions would break that 0-0 tie. The Altoona player would head the ball into the Spartan's net after a save by goalkeeper Brett Matthews (Angola, NY/Lake Shore). Penn State would take their 1-0 through the rest of the first half and into half time.
Altoona would get two quick shots off to begin the second half, but neither would find the back of the net. Freshman Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) head a header on frame for the Spartans just 6 minutes into the half, but the attempt on goal was saved by the Altoona goalkeeper.
The Spartans would begin to pick up their offense, registering shots from Brandon Pauly (Owego, NY/Owego) and Nick Johnson (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) that would both just miss the goal. Altoona and D'Youville would continue to trade shots as both teams looked to find the back of the goal, but neither team would score as the Lions would see their early lead to the end, winning by the final score of 1-0.
Hammer, Johnson and Mann all had 2 shots on goal to tie for the team lead. Senior Matthews had 7 saves in goal for the Spartans, and Aweso Noor (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) tied for the team lead with 1 shot on goal.
The men will play host for their next conference game on Tuesday, October 13th at 2pm against Pitt.-Bradford.
