Men's Volleyball Finish Opening Weekend of Season

Marcy, NY – On the second day of the SUNYIT Invitational, the D'Youville Men's Volleyball Team fell in both games to Wells College and the host, SUNYIT.

In the team's first game against Wells, D'Youville fell in four sets. The first match went the way of the Spartans, winning by the score of 25-19. Despite coming out strong to begin the game, Wells took the next 3 sets by the scores of 25-20, 25-20 and 25-19.

Alex Johnson (Lancaster, NY/Clarence) recorded 7 digs to lead the team. Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) had 6 digs, tied for second on the team. Tetreault also was second on the team with 10 kills. Leading the team with 11 kills was Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis), who also had the most total attacks with 23.

Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) recorded all 26 assists for the Spartans against Wells and was also tied for second on the team with 6 digs. Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) had one of the highest hitting percentages on the team with 62.5%, recording 6 kills on 8 total attempts.

Against the host SUNYIT, the Spartans took the game to 5 sets, but ultimately lost 3-2. D'Youville took the first match 25-18, but SUNYIT answered back. The hosts took the second match 25-15 and the third match 25-21. With the game on the line, D'Youville answered with a win in the fourth set 25-17. Despite battling back, the Spartans lost in the fifth set 15-9 to lose their second game of the day.

Freshman Brock Tetreault had an impressive game for the Spartans leading the team with total attacks, kills and digs with 27, 11 and 19. Collin McMahon (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) was first on the team with 21 assists, followed by Chris Busha's 12. For the second straight game, Brett Cawthorn recorded double-digit kills with 10. Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY/Eden) had 7 digs and Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) had 6 kills.

Freshman Brock Tetreault was named to the All-Tournament Team after an impressive first weekend as a Spartan. Totaling 32 kills, 76 total attacks, 36 digs and 4 service aces, Tetreault proved to be an important member of the team.

The men will open their home schedule this week on Tuesday, January 27th at 7pm against Penn State-Behrend in the College Center Gym.
