Last Saturday was a momentous day for the D'Youville Men's Soccer Team. Not only did they defeat Alfred State 3-2, but they earned their first win on their new field, Head Coach Brendan Murphy earned his first win as a collegiate coach and the team captured its first win in over a year.
The Spartans have scored 5 goals thus far this season, which is 1 more than they scored all of last season. Freshman Brandon Pauly (Owego, NY/Owego) leads the team in goals with 2 and points with 4. In the win over Alfred State, Pauly scored the second goal of the game to tie the game at 2. The assist came from fellow freshman Daniel Tarbell (Clarence, NY/Clarence), who is tied for the team lead in assists with sophomore Patrick Mann (Brighton, NY/Brighton).
Freshman Alf Johann Egge (Stavenger, Norway/Stavenger) opened up the scoring for the Spartans against Alfred State by scoring on a beautifully taken free kick. A third freshman finished off the scoring for the Spartans and sealed the victory for the team. Gerald West Jr (Buffalo, NY/Lockport) took a corner kick with 11 minutes left and buried it to the far pole, giving the goalie no chance for a save. The goal was West's first of the season.
Junior captain Nick Johnson (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) played a strong game yet again for the Spartans, showing in his play why he was named captain. Freshman Conner Ward (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) proved to extremely valuable on the back line for the team, derailing wave after wave of Alfred State attacks.
Mt. Aloysius enters the game with a 3-0 win against Rosemont College in their most recent game. Leading goal scorer is Graham Hunter with 5, and he is also tied for the team point lead with 11. Goalkeeper Justin Hann is first on the team with 35 saves.
After D'Youville finishes up its first conference game of the year against Mt. Aloysius on Saturday, the team begins a 4 game conference home-stand beginning with Pitt.-Greensburg on Saturday, October 4th at 4pm.
