Box Score Houghton, NY-The D'Youville College baseball team closed out their unusual day/night doubleheader with a 16-9 win over Houghton College in a single nine-inning game played under the lights.
The Spartans feasted on the host Highlanders pitching, especially in the middle innings, scoring all 16 runs in the third through the sixth innings. D'Youville bats rapped out a total of 18 hits.
Eric Simoncelli (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) went 4-5 at the plate with a triple and 2 RBI. Charlie Biddle (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) smacked a double and a triple and drove in a team-high four runs.
Mikiah Downing (Westpark, NY/Highland) came on in relief and pitched three innings, striking out four, to earn his first win as a Spartan. Downing came on in third inning with D'Youville down 2-0 and was the recipient of the Spartans' offensive output. The score was 13-4 when Downing came out after the fifth inning. Downing also helped his own cause going 2-2 with a double that scored two runs in the fifth inning.
Matt Veronica (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) went 3-6 with a pair of RBI against Houghton and in the opening game of the day went 2-4 with 2 RBI against St. John Fisher. Veronica's total on the day is 5-10 with four RBI and a double. In four games this season the senior infielder is hitting at a .500 clip (8-16).
In that single nine-inning afternoon game against St. John Fisher, the Cardinals jumped out to an early 10-0 lead and went on to win 21-5. It was the Spartans' first live action since playing Bard College 17 days ago.
The Spartans are 1-3 overall and are slated to start AMCC play with a twin-bill at Mount Aloysius April 5. Start time is 1:00 p.m.
