Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 West Seneca, NY-The cozy dimensions of the Spartans' home diamond make it a hitter friendly venue. Toss in today's wind direction blowing out to left field and those ingredients made today's two-game set versus Pitt-Greensburg ripe for offense. The teams combined to hit 12 home runs and ring up 57 runs in their AMCC doubleheader.
D'Youville bats got hot in the opener. Trailing 3-0, a Matt Veronica (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) two-run homer, a Jeff Spors (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore East) sacrifice fly, and a two-run single from Jordan Ianarelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) gave the Spartans a 4-3 lead after two innings.
Veronica's homer, the first of his career, ended a D'Youville drought of 33-straight innings without an extra-base hit.
Two Pitt-Greensburg runs in the third were answered by an Eric Simoncelli (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) solo homer and the game was tied at five apiece after three frames.
And just as quickly as they got hot, Spartan bats turned cold. Over the next four innings D'Youville would go hitless with nine strikeouts and Pitt-Greensburg would score 15 unanswered runs to take the opener 20-5.
In game two, the Spartans were undone by an 12-run Pitt-Greensburg fourth inning and trailed 16-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
And then the Spartan bats got hot again.
A Mikiah Downing (Westpark, NY/Highland) RBI single brought home Simoncelli who doubled in the previous at-bat.
In the fifth, Joel Paulino (Washington Heights, NY/ West Side) came to the plate in his first at-bat of the game hit a monster two-run homer. Then in the sixth, Paulino hit a long line drive that left the yard quickly and in two plate appearances the freshman had two big flies and five RBI to his credit.
Before Paulino's dinger in the sixth, Garat Kerr (London, Ontario/Regina Mundi) smacked a three-run homer. It was the first career round tripper for the sophomore infielder.
Kerr would add an RBI single in the seventh making the final score 23-10 in favor of Pitt-Greensburg.
The 10 runs D'Youville scored in game two were the most the Spartans had generated in any seven-inning game this season. The 15 runs totaled in today's doubleheader were a team-high for any two-game set this spring.
D'Youville plays their seventh-straight date at home April 23 and the opponent is Hilbert College. Doubleheader start time at Veterans Memorial Park (formerly Centennial) in West Seneca, NY is 1:00 p.m.
