Box Score 2 Altoona, PA-Heading into today's AMCC doubleheader, Penn State Altoona was the AMCC standings leader at 10-2 in conference play and 21-6 overall. D'Youville was 2-4 in AMCC play, 5-11 overall.
The Spartans got shutdown pitching from Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home), great team defense, and timely hitting to sweep the host Lions and begin their charge up the standings.
The Spartans started the afternoon by taking the first game 2-0. Shannon Evans (Cheektowaga, NY/East Aurora) had an RBI single in the first inning scoring Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) who doubled to open the inning. Ashley Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) provided an insurance run with an RBI single in the sixth scoring Evans.
In the nightcap, MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) smacked a two-run homer in the in the top of the sixth, one of only four D'Youville hits in the game, to give the Spartans a 3-1 win. Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) came through with an RBI single in the third inning that scored lead-off batter Lisa Petty (North Tonawanda, NY/Mount St. Mary Academy). Petty walked to start the inning and later advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch.
Pitcher McHenry went the distance in both games and allowed 13 hits in 14 innings pitched and struck out a total of six. The combination of McHenry and the errorless D'Youville defense made Penn State Altoona go 0-11 with runners in scoring position on the day.
The only blemish on the day was a Penn State Altoona run in the first inning of game two that snapped the team's streak of 21-straight innings without an opposing player crossing home plate.
"We played fantastic today," said D'Youville Head coach Ona Halladay. "This is what we build on moving forward."
D'Youville improves to 4-4 in AMCC play, 7-11 overall, and plays tomorrow (April 19) at Pitt-Greensburg. Start time for the AMCC doubleheader is 1:00 p.m.
