Box Score Rochester, NY - After several days of snow and severe weather, the D'Youville Men's Basketball Team got back to action Saturday afternoon defeating Alfred State 62-47 in their opening game of the RIT Tournament.
D'Youville had a 6 point lead at halftime with a score of 33-27 due in large part to senior captain Julian Reed's (Cheektowaga, NY/Union-Endicott) game leading 14 points. To go along with his point lead, Reed also led all D'Youville players with 7 rebounds at the half.
In the second half, the Spartans continued their consistent play by outscoring Alfred State 29-20 to defeat the Pioneers by the final score of 62-47. As a team, D'Youville shot 22-63 from the field, with 41 total rebounds and shot 10-17 from the line. The team played strong defense, recording 16 steals and 7 blocks.
"We played very good defense to start the second half," said fourth year Head Coach Earl Schunk. "That started our fast break and had us a 16 point lead," continued Schunk. The Head Coach contributed the team's win their sound defensive play and taking care of the basketball, saying "it was all about staying solid on defense and good shot selection."
Reed led all D'Youville scorers with 18 points, and recorded his second double-double in 3 games by adding 12 rebounds. To round out his stats, Reed added 2 steals and 5 blocks. Juniors Marcus Clarke (Olean, NY/Archbishop Walsh Academy) and Jon Gemerek (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) tied for second on the team with 14 points each. Gemerek played a great all around game by dishing out 7 assists on offense and had 5 steals on defense.
Freshman Bayani Salinas (Antioch, CA/Antioch) contributed big minutes off the bench for D'Youville. Salinas scored 7 points, had 1 rebound and 2 steals in his 18 minutes of work. Eleven different Spartans saw minutes against Alfred State.
D'Youville will play the host RIT for their second game of the RIT Tournament tomorrow, Sunday, November 23rd at 2pm.
