Box Score Buffalo, NY - After going all of last season without a conference win, the D'Youville Men's Soccer Team captured their first conference win of the season against Hilbert College Wednesday night by the score of 2-1 in 2OT.
Just over 30 minutes into the first half, Hilbert opened up the scoring to make the score 1-0. The Spartans and the Hawks traded chances for the rest of the first half and into the second half.
As the second half progressed, D'Youville created more and more chances until they finally ceased their opportunity and tied the game. Freshman Brandon Pauly (Owego, NY/Owego) took a corner kick with just under 20 minutes remaining in the game and fellow freshman Daniel Tarbell (Clarence, NY/Clarence) crashed the net to head in his first goal of the season.
As the rest of regulation time continued, both teams traded chances, including 5 corner kicks for D'Youville in 2 minutes. The intensity of the game increased as the minutes ticked on until 90 minutes were played and overtime began.
The first overtime saw a high level of intensity between the two teams as each team got closer and closer to finishing the game with one final shot. Ten minutes of overtime came and went with still no break in the tie.
As the second overtime got underway, the Spartans added even more pressure on the Hawks defense until finally they broke. Junior captain Nick Johnson (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) sent a ball to sophomore Patrick Mann (Brighton, NY/Brighton), who made no mistake by taking a perfectly placed shot beating the diving Hilbert goalkeeper. The goal was Mann's first of the season and first of his collegiate career.
Junior goalkeeper Brett Matthews (Angola, NY/Lake Shore) came up huge for D'Youville time and time again, making 9 saves on 10 shots. Matthews also saved a penalty kick in the first half to keep the game within reach. Freshmen Conner Ward (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) and Mike Lekanka II (Newfane, NY/Newfane) were key contributors on defense and in helping the Spartans earn the victory. As a team, the Spartans 10 shots on goal.
The next game for the D'Youville Men's Soccer Team is Saturday, October 11th against Penn St-Altoona. The game is home at the D'Youville Athletic Complex and begins at 4pm, following the women's game.
