Softball Takes First-Round Tournament Game

Box Score

Altoona, PA-Second-seed D'Youville scored early and often and needed just five innings to defeat third-seeded Pitt-Bradford 10-2

The win sends D'Youville to the finals of the winners bracket where they will face the host and number one seed Penn State Altoona tomorrow (May 4) at 1:00 p.m.

The Spartans scored runs in all four of their at-bats. MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) got the scoring party started with a solo shot in the first inning. It was the freshman's sixth home run of the season setting a new team record for homers by a first-year player.

The Spartans tacked on three unearned runs in the second inning to make it 4-0. A Shannon Evans (Cheektowaga, NY/East Aurora) RBI single in the third pushed the lead to 5-0.

The Spartans put the game out of reach in the fourth with a five-run inning. The big blows were a two-run double from Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) and a home run from pitcher Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home). McHenry also doubled in the game to finish 2-3 with 3 RBI.

Pitcher McHenry shut down Pitt-Bradford, yielding just four hits and one earned run while striking out seven for her tenth win of the season.

D'Youville is now 18-15 on the season.

"That was a great way to start the tournament," said D'Youville Head coach Angie Churchill. "It was the best game we have played this year. We had a lot of energy and we were focused at the plate."

Penn State Altoona and D'Youville split a pair of games April 22 at the Spartan's home field at the Amherst Northtown Center. The Spartans scored four runs in the last of the seventh to take the first game 6-5. Penn State Altoona won the second game 2-1 in nine innings.

Penn State Altoona (25-10) advanced to winners bracket with a 7-5 win earlier in the day over fifth-seed Mount Aloysius.
