Men's Volleyball Closes Season with Two Wins

Altoona, PA- Men's volleyball won a pair of matches closing the 2013 season at the .500 mark with a 16-16 record.

D'Youville opened the day with a four-set win at Penn State Altoona. Game scores were 27-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-18.

Senior Chris Krueger (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) had a match-high 17 kills and fellow classmates Jay Senozetnik (Eden, NY/Eden) paced the offense with 29 assists and Adam Dean (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) had a team-high 3 blocks.

Two sophomores played big parts in the win. Alex Johnson (Clarence, NY/Clarence) had 10 digs and Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY/Eden) had a match-high 3 service aces.

The Spartans survived a scare in the first set. Leading 23-18, the Spartans let Altoona back into the match with a 6-0 run and fought off a set point to come away with a 27-25 win.

In the season finale, D'Youville played what Head coach John Hutton called, "our best match of the season," and defeated Penn State Behrend in five sets.

Scores were 25-22, 17-25, 25-18, 16-25, and 15-11.

Senior Chris Temple (Highland, IL/Highland Park) smacked a match-high 19 kills and moved into 7th place on the school's career kills list, passing Jeremy Sadjak (2008-2011). Temple completes his career with 1,022.

Krueger added 12 kills, Dean with a match-high 4 blocks and 5 kills,and  Senozetnik a match-high double-double of 33 assists and 12 digs. Nick Vitello (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island), the only player ever at D'Youville to play every position during his four-year career, contributed at four different positions.

The Spartans hit .324 for the match, and finished with more kills (56-53) and blocks (8-6) than Behrend.

"It was a great way to end the season," said Hutton. "It was a great passing of torch from the seniors to the group that will compete next season."

The Spartans close the season winning their final two matches and 5 of the final 6, with all 5 of the wins coming on the road.
