West Seneca, N.Y.-After dropping the first game of non-conference doubleheader versus SUNY Canton 19-1, the Spartan baseball team came back with solid pitching, great defense, and timely hitting to win the nightcap 3-2.
It was the team's eighth win of the season, tying the program's single-season win record set back in 2000.
Tomorrow (April 29) the Spartans will host Pitt-Bradford at Veterans Park in West Seneca, New York for a chance to advance to their first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament and first appearance in a conference tournament since 2002.
Kyle Taylor (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) started game two and threw five strong innings giving up three hits and one run. It was he sophomore's first career pitching victory.
Matt Wendling (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) entered the game on relief in the sixth to get his second save of the season. Wendling made a sparking play in the seventh on a one hop bullet back to the mound.
D'Youville took a 1-0 lead in the first when Jay Senozetnik (Eden, NY/Eden) hit an RBI double to score Taylor. The Spartans tacked on two in the third taking advantage of Canton errors and moving runners on the base paths.
"It was a great effort," said Head coach Leo Dandes. "We put the bat on the ball and forced them to make plays. Tomorrow (against Pitt-Bradford) we'll just go out and play our game."
