Greensburg, PA- DJ Zanghi (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) delivered the key blow, a two-out double in the fifth inning that scored three runs, and pitcher Brent Gibbs (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) gave a strong complete game effort striking out five to give D'Youville an 8-5 win in game two at Pitt-Greensburg.
D'Youville trailed 3-1 heading into the fifth inning before the Spartans exploded for seven runs and building enough of a lead to carry them to victory. Eric Simoncelli (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg)hit an RBI double, and RBI singles were delivered by Jay Senozetnik (Eden, Eden) and Matt Wendling (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) before Zanghi's double.
It was the first multi-hit game for Zanghi and a career-high single-game RBI total for the senior outfielder.
Eight of the nine Spartan batters recorded a hit in game two.
"Brent put us on his back in game two and really gutted out a great win," said Spartan coach Leo Dandes.
Gibbs threw 147 pitches in earn his third win of the season.
In the opener, D'Youville was the wrong end of a big inning and came up just short in a seventh inning rally to lose 7-6.
The Spartans gave up five runs in the third inning but answered four in the fifth. Senozetnik had an RBI single and Garatt Kerr (London, ONT/Regina Mundi) drove in two with a base hit.
The deficit grew to 7-4 and the Spartans scored a pair in the seventh making the final 7-6.
Senozetnik was 3-3, Gibbs 2-3, and Kerr with a single-game high 3 RBI.
"I'm really proud of the effort today," said Dandes. "We went on the road and got a win against a strong Greensburg team."
The Spartans play a non-conference doubleheader tomorrow at Hiram Colege. Start time is 1:00 p.m.
