Late Goal Forces Tie for Women's Soccer; Men Defeated at Penn State Altoona

Altoona, PA- In women's soccer, a goal from host Penn State Altoona in the 85th minute forced overtime and from there the teams stayed scoreless through two 10-minute overtime sessions and finished in 1-1 tie.

The Spartans dodged some bullets late in regulation and in the extra frames. Goalkeeper Christina Ventresca (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) made a save with 10 seconds left to play in regulation. In the second overtime, Altoona sent a shot off the crossbar.

Melissa LaVere (Clarence, NY/Williamsville East) opened the game's scoring with her fourth marker of the season just 3:05 into play. LaVere gained possession on the left side of the box and buried a shot on the keeper's short side of the net.

D'Youville generated just three shots in goal for the game. One in each half and the third in the second overtime.

The Spartans are now 5-4-3 overall and 1-1-1 in AMCC play.

In the first game of today's doubleheader, the D'Youville men's soccer team was defeated by host Penn State Altoona 6-0. Goalkeeper Matt Smith (Bergen, NY/Byron-Bergen) made 15 saves during the game. In the second-half Smith stopped 9 of the 10 shots he faced.. 

Both Spartan's soccer teams play again this Tuesday, October 8 on their home turf at the Riverside Athletic Complex against Pitt-Bradford. The men's game starts the night off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the women's contest at 7:30 p.m.
