Buffalo, NY (10/23/10)-In three match races held on their home course at West Side Rowing Club, the D'Youville College crew took two out three match races versus rival Cazenovia College.
In the 3000-meter Varsity 4+ event, the Spartan's boat of Ashley Joya (Depew, NY/Cheektowaga), Amy O'Hara (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora), Mindy Walck (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda), Kaitlynn Trzaska (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) and coxswain Krista Pundt (Clarence, NY/Clarence) defeated Cazenovia by one full minute.
D'Youville then won the Novice/Mixed 8+ race by a whopping two minutes twenty seven (2:27) seconds over Cazenovia. Seven of the eight rowers including the coxswain made their collegiate rowing debut. Joining returning letter winner Mindy Marr (Batavia, NY/Batavia) were first-year teammates Lauren Ciurzynski (Attica, NY/Attica), Marissa Benzin (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), Amanda Pugakoff (Buffalo, NY/West Seneca East), Erin Weigand (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), Rebecca Rejewski (Derby, NY/Lake Shore), Kelsey Burch (Buffalo, NY/Charter for Applied Technology), Gretchen Mau (Cobleskill, NY/Cobleskill), and coxswain Megan Pohlman (Buffalo, NY/Charter for Applied Technology).
D'Youville closed the event with a six-second defeat in the Varsity 8+ 3,000-meter match race.
This concludes the fall portion of the 2010-11 schedule. The Spartan crew will also compete in the spring with a competition schedule to be announced.
