Saints Drop Season Opener to Greyhounds

WORCESTER, Mass. — The D'Youville University men's lacrosse team fell to RV Assumption University 22-4 on Friday at Brian Kelly Stadium.

To begin the game in the first quarter, the Saints had opportunities, notably a shot by Teighen Fils-Aime, but faced resistance from the Greyhounds' goalkeeper. The quarter concluded with Assumption ahead 2-0.

DYU gained early momentum in the second quarter with Noah Suchyna scoring a man-up goal at 12:59, followed by a Carsyn Kent goal assisted by Obrigh Tallchief at 11:25, leveling the score at 2-2. However, Assumption responded with a series of goals, starting at 9:42 and continuing with four more unanswered goals, creating a significant gap. Despite D'Youville's early efforts, ASU dominated the latter part of the quarter, leading to a 10-2 score at the end of the second quarter.

The Saints faced a challenging third quarter as the Greyhounds capitalized on several opportunities, scoring six unanswered goals. Despite D'Youville's efforts to regain control, including a faceoff win by Jake Bush at 14:34, turnovers plagued their attempts to respond offensively. Casey Berns made multiple crucial saves, including stopping a shot at 11:31. The quarter concluded with Assumption leading 16-2, marking the end of the third quarter.

DYU began the fourth quarter with William Nichols in goal and quickly faced a goal from ASU at 12:20. However, the Saints responded with a man-up goal by Stefano Evan, assisted by Henry Gibbons, at 10:37, bringing their score to three. D'Youville capitalized on a penalty against Assumption late in the quarter when Kent scored a man-up goal, assisted by Luciano Gonzalez, at 1:05 to close out the scoring on the day.

Berns made a substantial impact in goal with 21 saves against 51 shots faced. Kent led the offensive effort, scoring two goals from six shots, including one on a power play. Suchyna contributed with a goal, converting one of his four shots on target. Evan also found success, netting a goal from five attempts, three of which were on goal.

In their next game, D'Youville will face Point Park University on Saturday, Feb. 14 at noon. The matchup will take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
