Women's Basketball Falls to Queens College in Final Seconds

QUEENS, N.Y. — D'Youville fell to Queens College, 57-56, in a tightly contested matchup at Fitzgerald Gymnasium. D'Youville held a one-point lead entering the final quarter but was outscored 10-11 in the fourth, despite a 28-20 advantage in points in the paint.
The game tipped off with D'Youville finding momentum midway through the first quarter, sparked by Molly O'Toole's (Rochester, N.Y. / Aquinas Institute) layup at 7:27, narrowing the Knights' early lead. D'Youville continued to push, with O'Toole connecting on a 3-pointer at 2:34, trimming the deficit further. Xanthippi Karatasiou's (Katerini, Greece / Kontariotissa) successful layup and free throw with 1:07 remaining tied the game at 12. However, a late jumper allowed the Knights to edge ahead, closing the quarter with a 14–12 advantage.
D'Youville seized control in the second quarter with a strong offensive performance, highlighted by O'Toole's three-pointer just 14 seconds in, assisted by Karatasiou. Allie Hall (Rochester, N.Y. / Bishop Kearney) contributed significantly with a scoring burst that included back-to-back layups, propelling the visitors to a 10-point lead midway through the quarter. Trinity Small (West Chester TOwnship, Ohio / Purcell Marian) added a crucial three-pointer at 6:21 to extend D'Youville's advantage. Despite a brief response from the Knights, D'Youville maintained their lead, closing the period with a layup by Megan Fedor (Elmira, N.Y. / Elmira) and ending with a 32–25 lead.
In the third quarter, D'Youville managed to regain momentum with key contributions from O'Toole, who scored a layup at 6:53, and a jumper at 2:37, which briefly put them ahead. Despite their efforts, the Knights matched the scoring pace, and a late three-pointer at 0:49 shifted the lead back to them. In a dramatic final moment, Morgan Giancaterino's (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Sacred Heart Academy) layup with 12 seconds left gave D'Youville a one-point edge, but the Knights responded with a three-pointer, sealing the period with a 47-45 lead for the Knights.
D'Youville seized momentum with a crucial 3-pointer by O'Toole at 2:46, taking a narrow lead late in the final minutes. O'Toole's scoring was pivotal, adding a layup and a jumper earlier in the quarter to keep the game within reach. Despite D'Youville's defensive efforts, including a key steal by Ava Pearson (Colonie, N.Y. / Colonie) with 11 seconds left, the Knights regained the lead in the closing seconds with a layup, edging out D'Youville, 57-56.
O'Toole scored 21 points and collected 13 rebounds, including three 3-pointers. Pearson contributed defensively with two steals and one block. Alyssa Neumann (Silverdale, Wash. / Central Kitsap) added two blocks to her four rebounds. Giancaterino tallied 11 points, converting five of seven free throws.
