Saints Stumble in 3-0 Loss to Assumption

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Assumption University secured a decisive 3-0 victory over D'Youville University on Sunday at Dobson Field. The Greyhounds' offense dominated with three goals on 18 shots, while their defense held strong to earn a shutout. Despite D'Youville's 11 shots, they were unable to find the back of the net, as Assumption's goalkeeper recorded four saves.
Assumption took an early lead against D'Youville scoring in the 5th minute to make it 1-0. Their aggressive play continued with multiple offside calls and fouls, yet they maintained pressure. D'Youville's Melia La (Essex, England / Illinois Central College) attempted to equalize with a shot in the 12th minute, but it was saved by the Greyhounds keeper.  The Greyhounds' extended their lead with a second goal in the 34th minute, making it 2-0. Despite several attempts by Danica Brill (Gores Landing, Ontario / Trinity College) and others, D'Youville was unable to score, the Greyhounds made key saves to keep the scoreline unchanged by the end of the first half.
The second half began with D'Youville's Kayla Frasca (Bolton, Ontario / Humberview) taking an early shot at the 46th minute, missing out right. Assumption broke the deadlock at the 71st minute, scoring to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. Despite efforts from D'Youville's Ella Hurrle (Jordan Station, Ontario / Eden) and Eleonora Cecchini (San Marino, Fiorentino / Italy Liceo delle Scienze Umane), who each attempted shots, the home team could not find the back of the net. D'Youville's Alegra Black (Toronto, Ontario / Rabun Gap) made crucial saves, stopping multiple attempts from the Greyhounds, including two consecutive saves in the closing minutes of the match.
Black recorded seven saves for D'Youville, facing 18 shots on goal in a full 90 minutes. La managed to put one shot on target out of her single attempt during the match. Hurrle took two shots, both of which were on goal, contributing to the team's offensive efforts.
D'Youville holds a 1-1-0 overall record after their recent match. Assumption improves to 2-0-0 with the victory.
The next challenge for the D'Youville soccer team comes on September 10 as they travel to Rutherford, N.J., to face Felician University. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
