Morris Sets Hits Record, Saints Split with Staten Island to End 2025 Campaign

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The D'Youville University baseball team closed out their season with a doubleheader split against the College of Staten Island on Saturday.

Staten Island 7, D'Youville 6

The Saints got on the board first in game one. A pair of singles from sophomore Derek Onevelo (Buffalo, N.Y.) and senior Dillon Crook (Liverpool, N.Y.) set up a two-run double from junior Garett Wilson (Webster, N.Y.). Junior Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y.) followed with an RBI single into center field to stake DYU to an early 3-0 lead.

Redshirt sophomore Ryan McCarthy (Hamburg, N.Y.) toed the rubber for the Saints and held Staten Island scoreless through the first two innings. After senior Alec Boucher (Essex, Ontario) tripled to lead off the top of the third and junior Colby Wilson (Webster, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch, Onevelo ripped an RBI single to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Dolphins scored two runs on three hits off McCarthy in the bottom of the third to cut the Saints' lead in half. DYU got those runs back in the top of the fifth on a two-run homer from Morris to make it 6-2. The home run was Morris's 181st career hit, making him the record holder for the most career hits in program history. McCarthy struck out a pair in the bottom of the fourth and retired the side in order in the fifth and sixth to keep the Saints ahead by four.

Senior Rob Stephens (Seaford, N.Y.) replaced McCarthy in the bottom of the seventh and surrendered two runs to cut the Saints' lead to 6-4. Staten Island pushed across another in the eighth to make it a one-run game. With one out and two men on in the bottom of the ninth, disaster struck for DYU, as two throwing errors allowed two runs to cross, gifting the Dolphins a 7-6 walkoff victory.

D'Youville 21, Staten Island 10

Morris started on the mound for DYU in game two and allowed two runs in the bottom of the first to give Staten Island an early 2-0 lead. The Saints responded with a five spot in the top of the second, scoring two on a double from junior Austin Smith (Cohoes, N.Y.), one on a wild pitch, and two on a single from Morris to take a 5-2 lead.

DYU tacked on four more in the top of the third thanks to an RBI triple from Boucher, a two-run homer from Colby Wilson, and a run-scoring double play from Smith to extend their lead to 9-2. In the top of the fourth, senior Andrew Gerber (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) recorded his first career hit and RBI with a double down the left field line to bring to make it 10-2. An RBI double from Boucher, a wild pitch, and an RBI triple from redshirt junior Aidan Albano (West Seneca, N.Y.) brought across three more runs to make it 13-2.

After allowing two runs in the first, Morris settled down to hold them scoreless for the remainder of his outing, ending his day with two strikeouts in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the sixth, Smith collected his second hit and third RBI of the day with a single. Redshirt freshman Lucas Penner (Leamington, Ontario) followed with a base hit to push across another run. Junior Jonathan Simpson (Grand Island, N.Y.) drew a bases loaded walk and redshirt sophomore Cooper Cefaratti (Williamsville, N.Y.) singled to bring in two more runs and increase their lead to 17-2.

The Dolphins scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to shrink the Saints' lead to 17-6. In the top of the seventh, Smith drove in his fourth run of the day with a sacrifice fly and Lucas Penner singled up the middle to bring in another run to make it 19-6. Staten Island scored a pair in the bottom of the inning to cut it to 19-8.

In his final collegiate at-bat in the top of the eighth, senior Chris Stefan (Oakville, Ontario) launched a two-run homer over the left field fence to make it 21-8.  In the top of the ninth, senior Zach Penner (Leamington, Ontario) recorded his first career hit with a single through the left side. The Dolphins scored one in the eighth and one in the ninth, but redshirt sophomore Connor Joedicke (Bloomville, N.Y.) was able to shut the door on a 21-10 win for DYU.

D'Youville ends their 2025 campaign with a 14-33 overall record and an 8-12 mark in the ECC.
