Simpson Goes Deep Twice as Saints Split with Caldwell

CALDWELL, N.J. – The D'Youville University baseball team put together a strong offensive performance to salvage a doubleheader split against Caldwell University on Sunday.

Caldwell 13, D'Youville 9

The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After sophomore Derek Onevelo (Buffalo, N.Y.) walked and stole second, junior Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y.) singled to put runners at the corner. Redshirt junior Jake Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y.) brought both of them home with a two-run triple. Caldwell responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning off senior Chris Auclair (Baldwinsville, N.Y.).

In the top of the second, DYU loaded the bases with no outs after a walk from junior Blaise Kolbert (Lancaster, N.Y.) and base hits from redshirt sophomore Aidan Albano (West Seneca, N.Y.) and senior Dillon Crook (Liverpool, N.Y.). Onevelo cleared the bases with a three-run triple to put the Saints back in front 5-2. A sacrifice fly from Morris scored Onevelo and extended the lead to 6-2. The Cougars chipped away at DYU's lead with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the second to make it 6-5.

Auclair was able to keep Caldwell at bay in the bottom of the third, striking out two in a one-two-three inning. Redshirt Ryan McCarthy (Hamburg, N.Y.) replaced Auclair in the bottom of the fourth and surrendered three runs on four hits to give the Cougars an 8-6 lead. The Saints tied the game at 8-8 in the top of the fifth when Crook singled to drive in a run and Kolbert came around to score on an error.

Caldwell went back in front in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single that ended McCarthy's day. Freshman Jakob Denall (Clarence, N.Y.) came in in relief of McCarthy and allowed another run to score to give the Cougars a 10-8 lead, which they would not relinquish. Redshirt sophomore Cooper Cefaratti (Williamsville, N.Y.) tripled to lead off the top of the seventh and scored on a sacrifice fly from Kolbert to make it a one-run game. Caldwell tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh and one in the eighth to secure the 13-9 win.

D'Youville 11, Caldwell 4

The Saints scored in their first turn at-bat again in game two. Onevelo led off the game with a double and came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Morris to put them ahead 1-0. Morris started on the mound for DYU and surrendered an unearned run in the bottom of the first to level the game at 1-1.

Back-to-back RBI doubles from Kolbert and redshirt freshman Lucas Penner (Leamington, Ontario) put DYU back in front 3-1 in the top of the second. The Saints tacked on two more in the top of third when junior Jonathan Simpson (Grand Island, N.Y.) clubbed his fourth home run of the season to make it 5-1.

Redshirt sophomore Jacob Cooper (Erie, Pa.) legged out a triple to start the top of the fourth and came in to score on a base hit from Onevelo to make it 6-1. With two outs in the inning, Simpson left the yard again for his second home run of the game to extend DYU's lead to 8-1. In the top of the fifth, Kolbert make it 9-2 with an RBI single.

Morris's day on the mound ended after five innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits and striking out five. He was not done at the plate, though, as he slugged a two-run homer in the top of the sixth to put the hammer down, increasing DYU's lead to 11-2. Caldwell scored a pair off freshman Ty Graczyk (Buffalo, N.Y.), but the Saints went on to seal the 11-4 victory.

D'Youville's record now stands at 8-22 as they head into a four-game set with ECC rival Mercy University beginning Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Sal Maglie Stadium.
