Saints Blanked by Molloy in Final Home Game of the Regular Season

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – The D'Youville University baseball team was defeated by Molloy University 3-1 in their final home game of the regular season on Sunday.

Like Friday's game, this one was a pitchers duel. Saints' starter Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y.) allowed a one-out single in the top of the first, but retired the next two batters to post a scoreless frame. Redshirt junior Jake Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y.) dumped a single into center field with one out in the bottom of the first, but the next two batters were unable to bring him in.

Morris recorded his first and only strikeout of the day on his way to a one-two-three inning in the top of the second. Junior Colby Wilson (Webster, N.Y.) drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the second, but the next three batters struck out to end the inning.

Morris worked around a leadoff single in the top of the third to keep Molloy off the board. However, the Lions broke the ice in the top of the fourth with a home run to right to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Derek Onevelo (Buffalo, N.Y.) led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk, but once again DYU couldn't cash in.

In the top of the sixth, Molloy threatened to add on to their lead after an error placed a runner at second with two outs. The next batter singled to right, but senior Dillon Crook (Liverpool, N.Y.) gunned down the runner trying to score at home to end the inning and keep the Saints within one.

However, the Lions distanced themselves from DYU with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 3-0. The Saints couldn't get anything going on offense, as seventeen straight batters were retired until there were two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Onevelo walked and Morris beat out an infield single to bring the tying run to the plate, but Molloy was able to get the final out, securing the 3-0 win and the series sweep.

With the loss, D'Youville drops to 12-31 and 6-10 in the ECC, putting them on the outside looking in of the playoff picture with four games remaining. They begin their final series of the regular season on the road against the College of Staten Island on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
