Saints Defeated by Gannon in High-Scoring Affair

ERIE, PA. – The D'Youville University baseball team was defeated by Gannon University in a high-scoring affair on Tuesday afternoon.

The Saints loaded the bases to start the top of the first after sophomore Derek Onevelo (Buffalo, N.Y.) doubled, junior Garett Wilson (Webster, N.Y.) walked, and senior Alec Boucher (Essex, Ontario) was hit by a pitch. Junior Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y.) brought in the first run of the day with a sacrifice fly. Junior Blaise Kolbert (Lancaster, N.Y.) extended DYU's lead to 2-0 with a base hit but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double to end the inning.

Freshman Jakob Denall (Clarence, N.Y.) toed the rubber for the Saints and worked a quick one-two-three inning in the bottom of the first. He didn't make it out of the second inning, however, as the Golden Knights tagged him for five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-2 advantage.

DYU drew within a run in the top of the fourth after redshirt sophomore Jacob Cooper (Erie, Pa.) hit his first career home run and redshirt junior Jake Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y.) scored on an error to make it 5-4. In the bottom half of the inning, Gannon responded with four runs on three hits and an error to extend their lead to 9-4.

The Saints got two runs back on a two-run triple from Hollins to cut the deficit to 9-6 in the top of fifth. However, three hits and five walks plated four runs for the Golden Knights to open up a 13-6 lead. In the top of the sixth, Wilson doubled and Morris walked to set up a three-run bomb from junior Jonathan Simpson (Grand Island, N.Y.) to trim Gannon's lead to 13-9. The Golden Knights responded with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to give them a commanding 18-9 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Hollins collected his third hit and third RBI of the day with a double to right center to make it 18-10. Redshirt sophomore Michael Huff II (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) drove in DYU's eleventh run with a groundout to make it an 18-11 game. Gannon tacked on two more in the seventh and two in the eighth to seal the 22-11 victory.

With the loss, D'Youville drops to 12-27 on the season. They will return home to begin a four-game set with conference foe Molloy University on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
