Baseball Suffers Two Tough Losses to Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The D'Youville University Baseball team fell twice to ECC opponent Queens College on Friday afternoon. Despite a late rally from the Saints, they fell 9-5 in game one. Queens then went on to defeat D'Youville 8-6 in game two.

D'Youville University 5 at Queens College 9 – Game One
It was a slow start for the Saints offense in game one as they were unable to record a hit through six innings while Queens scored four runs in the bottom of the second before adding one more in the bottom of the sixth to take the 5-0 lead.

The Saints got two runners on in the top of the seventh after a walk followed by a single to right field from Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y. / Lancaster) but were unable to capitalize. The offense picked up for D'Youville in the top of the eighth as they loaded the bases with no outs. A single from Kevin Del Vecchio (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Westlane Secondary School) scored the first run for the Saints and another single from Billy Morris knocked in two more to leave the Saints trailing 5-3. Alec Boucher (Essex, Ontario / St. Thomas of Villanova) reached on a fielder's choice allowing the Saints fourth run to score and some smart baserunning from Boucher brought him home to tie the game at five before the inning would end.

Queens immediately fought back plating four more runs to retake the 9-5 lead in the bottom of the eighth. The Saints were unable to manufacture anymore runs in the top of the ninth leading the Knights to the 9-5 win in game one.

D'Youville University 3 at Queens College 9 – Game Two
The Saints offense heated up quickly with Billy Morris knocking a single up the middle to score the first run for the Saints in the top of the first. A strong start for Freshman pitcher, Ty Graczyk (Buffalo, N.Y. / St. Joseph Collegiate Institute) shut down the Queens offense for the first three innings, but the Knights continued to fight scoring six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the 6-1 lead.

D'Youville immediately answered plating two more runs off a double from Derek Onevelo (Buffalo, N.Y. / St. Joseph Collegiate Institute) and a sacrifice fly from Alec Boucher to bring the score to 6-3. Queens added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score to 8-3, but the Saints continued to fight on.
A fielder's choice from Dillon Crook (Liverpool, N.Y. / Liverpool) along with a double from Jake Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Orchard Park) score three more runs for the Saints as they got within two at 8-6, but the inning would end before the Saints could fully come back and Queens would take game two 8-6.
