Morris Sets RBI Record, Graczyk Tosses Shutout in Doubleheader Sweep of Mercy

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – The D'Youville University baseball team swept a doubleheader against Mercy University on Saturday, winning game one 5-2 and game two by a score of 5-0.

D'Youville 5, Mercy 2

Mercy took an early lead after two hits and an error netted them a run in the top of the first. The Saints were kept off the board until the bottom of the third. After redshirt freshman Lucas Penner (Leamington, Ontario) walked and sophomore Derek Onevelo (Buffalo, N.Y.) doubled to put runners at second and third, junior Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y.) brought both of them home with a base hit to left to put DYU in front 2-1. With those two RBI, Morris set the program record with 106 RBI.

Junior Colby Wilson (Webster, N.Y.) followed Morris with an RBI single to increase the Saints' lead to 3-1. After allowing a run in the top of the first, DYU starter Ryan McCarthy (Hamburg, N.Y.) kept the Mavericks off the board until the top of the sixth. A single and a double trimmed the Saints' lead to 3-2, but McCarthy induced a pair of fly outs to avoid further damage.

Junior Blaise Kolbert (Lancaster, N.Y.) replaced McCarthy on the mound in the top of the seventh and tossed a one-two-three frame. He ran into trouble in the top of the eighth as Mercy loaded the bases with two outs, but he punched out the next batter to get out of the jam. DYU added a couple insurance runs in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from senior Dillon Crook (Liverpool, N.Y.) and a throwing error by the Mavericks shortstop to make it 5-2. Kolbert sent Mercy down in order in the top of the ninth to seal the win for the Saints.

McCarthy scattered ten hits to allow just two runs (one earned) and struck out two in six innings of work. Kolbert got the save after throwing three shutout innings and striking out three. Onevelo, Morris, and redshirt freshman Michael Huff II (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) all recorded multi-hit games.

D'Youville 5, Mercy 0

Freshman Ty Graczyk (Buffalo, N.Y.) toed the rubber for DYU in game two and struck out a pair in a scoreless top of the first. Senior Alec Boucher (Essex, Ontario) reached second on an error and Morris walked to start a rally for the Saints in the bottom of the first. Wilson brought home Boucher with an RBI single through the right side to give them a 1-0 lead. Junior Jonathan Simpson (Grand Island, N.Y.) drove in another run on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0.

Graczyk retired eleven straight batters until he surrendered a two-out single in the top of the fourth, but he retired the next batter to keep the Mavericks off the board. In the bottom of the fourth, Crook reached first on a fielding error, advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt, and then scored on a wild pitch to extend the Saints' lead to 3-0. DYU added two more runs on a groundout and an error to make it 5-0. The Saints scored three runs in the inning without recording a hit, taking advantage of three errors and three walks by Mercy.

Graczyk allowed a leadoff triple in the top of the fifth but retired the next three batters to keep the shutout intact. He hurled a one-two-three frame in the top of the sixth and worked around a walk and a single in the seventh to seal the 5-0 win for DYU.

Graczyk struck out four, walked just one, and allowed four hits in the first complete game shutout of his career. Onevelo and Huff both reached base multiple times, with Onevelo walking three times and Huff walking twice.

With the doubleheader sweep, D'Youville improves to 4-3 in the ECC and 10-23 overall. They will look to win the series against Mercy on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
