BUFFALO, N.Y. – The D'Youville University Softball team came back strong as they swept Mercy University on Saturday. The Saints offense exploded in their 15-7 win in game one. Strong defense and consistent at-bats led to a 6-0 win in game two to complete the sweep.
D'Youville University 15 vs Mercy University 7– Game One (5 Innings)
The Saints offense got on top first in game one jumping up 2-0 after a double from
Annie Jorgenson (Victoria, BC / Belmont SS) scored
Emily Przybysz (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier Central) and
Laura Beck (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Jorgenson. D'Youville tacked on a third run in the bottom of the third as Beck reached on a Mercy error to score Jorgenson again.
The Mavericks fought to comeback in the top of the fourth plating five runs to jump ahead 5-3 and would add two more in the top of the fifth to move ahead 7-3.
D'Youville's offense accepted the challenge scoring 12 runs in the bottom of the inning without recording an out.
Sophia Arno (Clarence Center, N.Y. / The Brook Hill School) delivered the double to right field that pushed the Saints ahead at 9-6, scoring three to clear the bases. Przybysz reached on a fielder's choice to score Arno and
Gianna Adamo (Lockport, N.Y. / Starpoint) doubled to score Przybysz and bring the Saints to an 11-7 lead. A single and a hit batter reloaded the bases with no outs and
Summer Clark (Williamsville, N.Y. / Williamsville East) delivered the monster grand slam to bring the Saints to 15 to walk off game one in a mercy rule win over the Mavericks.
Clark's grand slam helped herself out as she earned the win in the circle throwing the complete game striking out three while only allowing three earned runs and no walks.
D'Youville University 6 vs Mercy University 0 – Game Two
D'Youville's offense rolled right into game two as
Emily Przybysz reached first on an error to start the game and
Gianna Adamo followed along with an infield single to put Przybysz on third. The single was a monumental one for Adamo as it marked her 157
th career hit, putting her as the new all-time career hits leader in D'Youville softball's history. Adamo got in a rundown between first and second allowing Przybysz to score, putting the Saints ahead 1-0.
The Saints tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth after
Shannon Howes (Palgrave, Ontario / St. Thomas Aquinas) and
Sophia Arno both singled to each knock in a run.
Summer Clark led off the bottom of the sixth with another shot to centerfield for a solo homerun to bring the score to 4-0.
Mia Trietley (Buffalo, N.Y. / Frederick Law Olmsted) came up big with a pinch-hit single to score the fifth run for the Saints and a walk from Jorgenson brought in the sixth and final run for D'Youville.
Sarah Parzych (Getzville, N.Y. / Williamsville North) threw her second complete game shutout of the season allowing six hits while tying a season-best eight strikeouts in the 6-0 win.
