Softball Closes Out Space Coast Games on a Two Win High Note

MELBOURNE, FL – The D'Youville University Softball team played their last two games in Florida at the Space Coast Games on Friday ending on a high note. The Saints were dominant on both sides of the ball in game one, defeating Post University 10-2 after five innings. D'Youville then went on to defeat NE-10 opponent Franklin Pierce University 5-2 to close out the week.

D'Youville University 10 vs Post University 2 – Game One (5 Innings)
The Saints offense was on the attack right from the start of game one as Emily Przybysz (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier Central) led off the inning with a single and advanced to third by the second out. Isabella Mancino (Wynantskill, N.Y. / Averill Park) knocked a single to center to score Przybysz and put the Saints on the board 1-0.

D'Youville's offense put their foot on the gas in the top of the second scoring six more runs to lead 7-0. The Saints recorded three hits in the inning from Shannon Howes (Palgrave, Ontario, Canada / St. Thomas Aquinas), Emily Przybysz, and Gabby Moreno (San Diego, Calif. / Rancho Buena Vista) while also capitalizing on three Post errors.

A leadoff double from Sophia Arno (Clarence Center, N.Y. / The Brook Hill School) paved the way for the Saints to score their eighth run in the top of the third. A double from Becca Sawyer (Courtice, Ontario, Canada / Holy Trinity Catholic SS) and a single from Gianna Adamo (Lockport, N.Y. / Starpoint) would knock in two more runs in the top of the fourth to put the Saints ahead 10-0.

Kendal Lehnen (Sherrill, N.Y. / Vernon Verona Sherrill) was dominant in the circle for the first three innings of play retiring all nine Post batters without allowing a base runner. Post managed a run in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the bottom of the fifth, but it was not enough to stop D'Youville as they went on to win game one 10-2 after five innings of play.

D'Youville University 5 vs Franklin Pierce University 2 – Game Two
It was a defensive battle to start game two as both the Saints and Ravens went scoreless in the first inning and a half. It was the Saints who struck first in the bottom of the second as Annie Jorgenson (Victoria, BC, Canada / Belmont SS) led off the inning with a single to center field and Gabby Moreno singled down the left field line to put runners on first and second. Both runners scored as Becca Sawyer put the ball in play, reaching on an error to give the Saints the 2-0 lead.

The score remained 2-0 until the top of the fifth when Franklin Pierce tied the game at two following a walk and two hits. D'Youville didn't let the game stay tied long as they scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead. Sophia Arno and Emily Przybysz both singled to start the inning and Summer Clark (Williamsville, N.Y. / Williamsville East) was intentionally walked to load the bases. Annie Jorgenson knocked an infield single and scored two runners after capitalizing on a Ravens throwing error. Summer Clark came home next on a passed ball to bring the score to 5-2 in the Saints favor.

Sarah Parzych (Getzville, N.Y. / Williamsville North) threw the complete game for the Saints allowing only two runs and five hits while striking out four. Parzych earned the win for the Saints to move to 3-1 on the year.
