Saints Falls to 4-4 after Dropping Games to New Haven and Ferris State

MELBOURNE, FL – The D'Youville University Softball team dropped a pair of games to move to 4-4 on the year. The Saints fell 6-4 in game one to the New Haven University Chargers before dropping game two 9-1 to Ferris State after five innings.

D'Youville University 4 vs New Haven University 6 – Game One
Game one started with the Saints offense in full control. Shannon Howes (Palgrave, Ontario, Canada / St. Thomas Aquinas) walked and quickly stole second to get into scoring position. Summer Clark (Williamsville, N.Y. / Williamsville East) put the ball in play to move Howes to third and a single from Annie Jorgenson (Victoria, BC, Canada / Belmont SS) scored Howes to put the Saints ahead 1-0.

D'Youville extended their lead in the bottom of the second after Emily Przybysz (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier Central) led off the inning with a single and moved to third as the inning progressed. Isabella Mancino (Wynantskill, N.Y. / Averill Park) knocked a sacrifice fly to left field to score Przybysz and put the Saints up 2-0.

Summer Clark was dominant in the circle for the first four innings of play allowing just one hit and no runs to keep the Saints ahead. D'Youville moved ahead 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth as a single from Sophia Arno (Clarence Center, N.Y. / The Brook Hill School) knocked in a run and Przybysz used her speed to steal home and score another.

The Chargers got their revenge in the top of the fifth as they loaded the bases and took a 5-4 lead following an inside-the-park grand slam. The Saints offense worked to get back in the game but were unable to score. The Chargers tacked on one final run in the top of the sixth and went on to win the game 6-4.

Annie Jorgenson went three for four to lead the Saints offense with one RBI. Emily Przybysz was right beside her going three for three at the plate with two runs scored, a double, and two stolen bases. Sarah Parzych (Getzville, N.Y. / Williamsville East) came in to relieve Clark throwing 1.2 innings allowing no runs and striking out two.

D'Youville University 1 vs Ferris State University 9 – Game Two
The Saints offense attacked early again after a leadoff walk led from Mancino led to a 1-0 Saints lead after the top of the first. The Bulldogs answered quickly plating four runs in the bottom of the first to take the 4-1 lead. The Bulldogs added three more runs in the bottom of the second to move ahead 7-1.

Parzych was brought in as relief in the bottom of the third for the Saints and shut down the Bulldog defense in the bottom of the third to keep the score 7-1. The Bulldog offense picked back up in the bottom of the fourth as they reached 9-1. The Saints threatened in the top of the fifth as Laura Beck (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third. However, the Saints were unable to get the run across the plate and Ferris State would defeat the Saints 9-1 after five innings.
