ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Closing out the regular season, the D'Youville University men's basketball team fell to Roberts Wesleyan University Wednesday evening by a score of 69-55.
The Saints (8-17, 6-10 ECC) were led offensively by
Renard Fontes-Jules (Brockton, Mass./Olympus Sports Academy) with 11 points and five assists while
Dawson Matsell (Hamilton, Ontario/Orangeville Prep) added 10 points.
TI Scruggs (Huntsville, Ala./Hazel Green) led the way on the glass, grabbing nine rebounds.
RWU jumped out to a quick 7-4 lead, but DYU kept battling, tying the game at 7-7 thanks to a converted and-one from
Elisha Warren (Woodhaven, Mich./Woodhaven). Roberts trying to pull away, but the Saints kept it within two-possessions. It wasn't until a 10-0 run by the Redhawks halfway through the first half to make it 24-13, where the Saints found themselves with their backs against the wall. D'Youville put together a pair of strong possessions with Scruggs and Matsell finding the basket to cut the deficit to seven. From there, Roberts was able to take back control to take a 42-22 lead into the break.
Trialing by 18 points halfway through the second half, DYU cut the deficit to 13 points with a three-pointer from Matsell and a layup from Fontes-Jules to make it 53-40. Roberts then went on their own 5-0 run to push the lead back to 18 points and kept the strong defense going. The Saints battled but after a few empty possessions, Roberts was able to take a 64-42 lead with 6:02 left in regulation. DYU was able to cut the lead down to 13 points late in the game, but the comeback came up short.
DYU went 23-for-66 (34.8 percent) from the field with RWU going 27-for-50 (54.0 percent) from the floor. The Redhawks held the edge on the glass, grabbing 43 rebounds to the Saints' 29 rebounds.
The Saints will now sit idle going into the weekend and will know their fate at the conclusion of the conference schedule.
