Saints Swept in Doubleheader to Open Season

EAST STROUDSBURG, PA. – The D'Youville University baseball team opened their 2025 season with a pair of losses to East Stroudsburg University on Sunday.

East Stroudsburg 3, D'Youville 0

Junior Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y.) picked up DYU's first hit of the season in the top of the first with a single through the right side, but the next two batters were retired, and he was stranded at second. Senior Chris Auclair (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) got the start on the mound for the Saints and retired East Stroudsburg one-two-three, including a strikeout, in his first inning of work. In the bottom of the second, Auclair worked around a double and two walks to escape a bases-loaded jam and keep the Warriors off the board.

In the top of the third, Morris singled again and senior Alec Boucher (Essex, Ontario) walked to put two runners on with two outs. A wild pitch advanced Morris and Boucher to second and third, but junior Garett Wilson (Webster, N.Y.) struck out to end the threat. After East Stroudsburg started off the bottom of the third with a pair of singles, an error pushed across the first run of the game for the Warriors, and an RBI single extended their lead to 2-0.

Auclair retired the first two batters in the bottom of the fifth, but an error and a walk spelled an end to his day, and he was lifted for junior Blaise Kolbert (Lancaster, N.Y.). Kolbert surrendered an RBI single on the first batter he faced, increasing East Stroudsburg's lead to 3-0.

In the top of the sixth, Wilson walked and junior Jonathan Simpson (Grand Island, N.Y.) singled with two outs in an attempt to mount a late rally for the Saints. However, redshirt sophomore Michael Huff II (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) struck out and DYU came up empty. Kolbert held the Warriors scoreless in the sixth and finished with a line of two strikeouts, two hits, and no runs in 1.1 innings. The Saints were unable to score in the seventh, and East Stroudsburg secured the 3-0 victory.

The Saints' offense was held to four hits in the first game of the doubleheader. Morris collected two of them. Auclair allowed three unearned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out four in 4.2 innings.

East Stroudsburg 13, D'Youville 3

Redshirt junior Jake Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y.) led off game two with a single and Wilson walked to move Hollins into scoring position, but DYU was unable to push any runs across in the first inning. Sophomore Mihir Manerikar (Mississauga, Ontario) toed the rubber for the Saints and plunked two batters in the bottom of the first and allowed one to score on a wild pitch.

In the top of the second, Kolbert knocked a single to start the inning and Huff II walked to give DYU a scoring opportunity. Sophomore Derk Onevelo (Buffalo, N.Y.) grounded into a double play, though, and the Saints came up empty-handed. The Warriors got to Manerikar for four runs on four hits in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Boucher led off the top of the fourth with a walk and swiped second to move into scoring position. Kolbert drove him in with a single for DYU's first run of the season. After Huff II walked to extend the inning, Onevelo sent a single up the middle to bring home Kolbert and cut East Stroudsburg's lead to 5-2. After Manerikar hit a batter to start the bottom of the fourth, he was removed for senior Mike Pasquarella (Hamburg, N.Y.). Pasquarella was unable to stop the bleeding, allowing two hits and a walk before being replaced by senior Rob Stephens (Seaford, N.Y.). The Warriors scored four runs on three hits in the inning and tacked on another in the fifth to open up a 10-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Onevelo drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a passed ball. Morris drove him in with a single to make it a 10-3 game. Morris stole second, Boucher walked, and both runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch with two outs. However, Wilson struck out to end the inning. East Stroudsburg piled on three more runs in the seventh and held the Saints scoreless in the eighth and ninth to clinch the 13-3 victory.

Hollins and Kolbert each reached base three times in the contest with Kolbert picking up an RBI. Morris finished 1-for-5 with an RBI and Onevelo went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

D'Youville will look to bounce back on Monday when they face East Stroudsburg in another doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m.
