Saints Escape Canton With A Win Over Walsh

CANTON, Ohio, - Makin the short trip to the Midwest, the D'Youville University men's lacrosse team escaped with a 12-11 win over Walsh University Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Saints (2-1) were led by Obrigh Tallchief (Irving, N.Y./Lake Shore) led the way with six goals with Brady Ruffalo (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) adding three goals. Jonathan Abbarno (Chargin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) added a pair of goals while Stefano Evan (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal), Carsyn Kent (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson Secondary), and Luciano Gonzalez (Colquitlam, British Columbia/Centennial Secondary) each added a pair of assists. Logan Schwartz (Depew, N.Y./Depew) had an all-around day, scoring one goal and leading the team in groundballs with four and caused turnovers with three.
 
Tallchief got DYU on the board first, but the Cavaliers responded, scoring two unanswered to make it 2-1. Goals from Ruffalo, Schwartz, Abbarno, and Tallchief helped the Saints take a 5-2 lead after one period of action.
 
Ruffalo and Tallchief continued to find the net at will, each scoring a pair of goals to open the second quarter of play to take a 9-2 lead with 8:55 left until halftime. Walsh got one more on the board before the break but trailed 9-3 after a half of play.
 
Coming out of the break, the Cavaliers closed the gap, scoring two straight to make it 10-5. Tallchief got the Saints back to a seven-goal lead with back-to-back goals. Walsh closed out the third quarter with two more goals to trail 12-7 going into the final frame of the game.
 
In the fourth quarter, the Saints' offense cooled down but were able to holdoff the four goals from the Cavs to escape with the win.
 
Casey Berns (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) earned the win in net, making 15 saves.
 
Saturday's game against Dominican University of New York this Saturday, February 22nd, has been postponed due to field conditions. The Saints will next be in action next Wednesday, February 26th, as they host Lake Erie College at 4 p.m.
