Saints Firing on All Cylinders in Blowout Win Over Queens

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The D'Youville University women's basketball team cruised to a 78-48 blowout win over Queens College at the Saints Center on Friday.

Senior Sofie Fuglsang (Oberanven, Luxembourg) and freshman Aliviya Vallone Russell (Buffalo, N.Y.) led the offense for the Saints, scoring 21 points apiece. Fuglsang also made an impact on defense, grabbing five rebounds and recording three steals. Senior Anna Jankovic (Averill Park, N.Y.) recorded a double-double for the second consecutive game, scoring 11 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.

Vallone Russell got DYU on the board with a three-pointer and knocked down another to put them in front 8-5. After being fouled on a three-point attempt, Vallone Russell converted all three free throws to give the Saints a 13-12 lead with 4:55 remaining in the first quarter. Close-range jumpers from Jankovic and freshman Samantha Ruhlman (Warren, Pa.) extended DYU's lead to five with 2:09 left in the quarter. Fuglsang and Jankovic both converted layups as the Saints closed the quarter on an 11-0 run to take a 21-12 lead.

A mid-range jumper from Fuglsang brought DYU's lead up to thirteen early in the second quarter. Queens did not score their first basket of the quarter until the 5:38 mark and had been held scoreless by the Saints since the 5:39 mark in the first quarter. Fuglsang knocked down a triple and Jankovic put in a layup to increase DYU's lead to 32-14 with 2:48 remaining in the quarter. Layups from Vallone Russell and junior Isabella Kostyal-Larrier (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) kept the lead at eighteen as the game went to halftime.

Vallone Russell buried a pair of three-pointers early in the third quarter to make it 42-22 Saints. Ruhlman and Fuglsang knocked down three-pointers of their own to keep the lead at twenty with 4:09 left in the quarter. Jankovic and Fuglsang both put in layups and redshirt junior Haleigh Schafer (Eggharbor City, N.J.) converted a pair of free throws to put DYU ahead 56-32 going into the fourth quarter.

Kostyal-Larrier and redshirt sophomore Megan Fedor (Elmira, N.Y.) kept the Saints' lead at twenty-four with a pair of layups early in the fourth quarter. A steal from Fuglsang led to a fast-break layup for Vallone Russell to make it 67-40 halfway through the quarter. Fuglsang then cashed in from beyond the arc to make it 72-42 with 3:26 remaining. Junior Morgan Giancaterino (Orchard Park, N.Y.) put in a layup to give DYU their biggest lead of the day at 78-47 with 44 seconds remaining, and the Saints went in to close out the 78-48 victory.
