DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. — D'Youville men's basketball battled through two overtimes but ultimately fell on the road to Mercy, 103-98, in a tightly contested ECC clash on Sunday afternoon.
Mercy opened the scoring, but Elisha Warren answered with a three-pointer to spark the Saints. Sean Reynolds knocked down a pair of early triples as D'Youville jumped out to a 9-6 advantage, and despite a Mercy push midway through the half, the Saints remained in control behind efficient perimeter shooting. Reynolds capped the opening period with another three in the closing seconds to give D'Youville a 35-27 lead at the break.
The Saints extended their advantage early in the second half, as Trayton Trice converted three straight layups to push the lead to 41-29 just under two minutes in. Mercy responded with a 10-0 run to close the gap, and the game settled into a back-and-forth battle the rest of the way. Warren's layup with 2:40 remaining tied the score at 65, and Jordan Trahan's basket with 21 seconds left forced a 71-71 tie at the end of regulation.
In overtime, D'Youville briefly pulled ahead with free throws from Trice and a three-pointer from Reynolds, but Mercy answered each time. Reynolds connected on a jumper in the final minute before Derek Long drilled a last-second three to tie the game at 83 and send it to a second overtime.
The Mavs edged ahead in the second extra period and sealed the win from the free-throw line. Maxence Massadila hit two clutch three-pointers in the final minute to bring the Saints within one, but the Mavericks capitalized on key free throws down the stretch as they went on to secure the 103-98 victory.
Reynolds led the Saints with 26 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while Trice recorded a double-double with 23 points, 11 rebounds, and a perfect 11-for-11 effort from the line. Warren added 18 points, 14 rebounds, three blocks, and three steals, and Massadila finished with 13 points and 10 assists.
D'Youville returns home on Sunday, Dec. 21, hosting Saint Michael's College at noon inside the Saints Center Gym.
