O'Toole Puts Up 15 as Saints Fall to Fighting Scots 65-50 in Home Opener

BUFFALO, N.Y. — D'Youville fell to Edinboro, 65-50, at Saints Center Gym. Despite leading 11 times throughout the game, D'Youville struggled offensively, shooting 37% from the field and only converting 2 of 2 free throws. Edinboro capitalized on turnovers and outscored D'Youville 26-16 in the paint, securing the win with a strong fourth-quarter performance.
D'Youville began the quarter with a strong start as Molly O'Toole (Rochester, N.Y. / Aquinas Institute), assisted by Ava Pearson (Colonie, N.Y. / Colonie), hit a 3-pointer just 12 seconds into the game. Despite an initial lead, the home team faced a challenge as the Fighting Scots responded with a 7–0 run, taking control midway through the quarter. D'Youville managed to regain momentum with a 3-pointer by Pearson and a layup by Morgan Giancaterino (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Sacred Heart Academy), briefly taking the lead at 8–7. However, Edinboro's consistent scoring kept the game tight, and they held a narrow 16–15 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
D'Youville made a significant push midway through the second quarter, highlighted by Giancaterino's layup at 2:46 that gave them a brief lead. Xanthippi Karatasiou (Katerini, Greece / Kontariotissa) contributed with a key 3-pointer early in the quarter, assisted by Allie Hall (Rochester, N.Y. / Bishop Kearney), which set the tone for D'Youville's offensive efforts. Despite their efforts in the paint, D'Youville fell behind as Edinboro capitalized on turnovers, ending the quarter with a 32-28 lead over D'Youville.
D'Youville battled to gain momentum in the third quarter, with Aliviya Vallone Russell's (Buffalo, N.Y. / Cardinal O'Hara) three-pointer at 3:24 serving as a key highlight. The team showed resilience defensively with two steals by Hall, helping to keep the pressure on Edinboro. Despite the effort, D'Youville trailed slightly by the end of the quarter, with the score standing at 46-39 in favor of the Fighting Scots.
D'Youville attempted to shift momentum with a three-pointer by Pearson at 9:05, narrowing the gap slightly. O'Toole further contributed by hitting a three-pointer at 4:24, assisted by Russell, but Edinboro continued to maintain their edge. Despite some defensive efforts, including a block by Hall at 1:57, D'Youville couldn't close the gap significantly. Edinboro capitalized on free throws and pivotal three-pointers to extend their lead. D'Youville's efforts in the fourth were insufficient to counter Edinboro's scoring from the bench and the line. The game concluded with the Fighting Scots securing a 65–50 victory.
O'Toole led the team with 15 points, connecting on three 3-pointers and collecting nine rebounds. Giancaterino added 11 points, making five of her seven field goal attempts, and recorded five assists. Hall contributed defensively with three steals and two blocks, alongside four rebounds. Pearson scored six points from beyond the arc and dished out three assists.
