WASHINGTON, D.C. — D'Youville fell to the University of the District of Columbia by a score of 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in an ECC clash.
The first half began with the Saints applying early pressure, as
Dylan Danch's shot was saved by Sergio Becerra in the fourth minute. D'Youville kept the pressure on with shots by
Konrad Homberg,
Ethan Robinson and
Luca Mansfield-Osborne. However, it was the Firebirds who were able to strike first, scoring in the 24th minute with Ignacio Lopez netting a penalty kick. They extended their advantage shortly after, with Alexander Moody-Stuart adding another goal. D'Youville continued to press, with multiple efforts on goal, but the half concluded with the Firebirds leading 2-0.
The second half kicked off with the Saints narrowing the deficit when Danch netted his ninth goal of the season in the 53rd minute, assisted by
Omar Daoudi, bringing the score to 2-1. D'Youville continued to apply pressure, with Robinson and Mansfield-Osborne both testing the UDC defense, but their efforts were saved by the Firebirds goalkeeper.
Matthew Solorio made key saves for D'Youville to keep the match within reach. Despite multiple attempts, DYU was unable to capitalize further, with shots from Danch and others either saved or going wide. The match concluded with the Saints trailing 2-1, unable to find the equalizer as time expired.
Solorio recorded six saves in goal, facing eight shots in a full 90 minutes of play. D'Youville out-shot the Firebirds 9-8 in the contest; Danch scored one goal and led the team with six shots, three of which were on target. Daoudi contributed with an assist in the match, facilitating Saints' opportunities.
The next test for D'Youville arrives as they host Gannon University on October 15th. The game is set for a 2 p.m. kickoff at Dobson Field.
