ASHLAND, OH – The D'Youville University Women's Volleyball dropped two matches in their final day of the Ashland University Volleyball Tournament. The Saints fell 3-0 in the morning to East Stroudsburg University and then dropped their afternoon match against Nova Southeastern University 3-0.
Game One – D'Youville University 0 at East Stroudsburg University 3 (20-25, 29-31, 11-25)
Set One
The Saints fell behind early in their first set of the day, but kills form
Isabelle Prentice (Bainbridge, Wash. / Bainbridge),
Madeline O'Brien (East Amherst, N.Y. / Clarence), and
Maddie Boglev (Hamburg, N.Y. / St. Mary's) helped keep them in the set. As game play continued, East Stroudsburg held their lead but after three errors from the Warriors, the Saints found themselves within one at 20-19. East Stroudsburg would sacrifice one more point on an attack error before taking the set 25-20.
Set Two
The Saints fell behind again in set two, but back-to-back kills from
Cameron Ulinski (Parkland, FL / Marjory Stoneman Douglas) gave the Saints the 9-8 lead. The set continued with the lead exchanging hands of both teams until East Stroudsburg went on a five-point run to jump up 15-12. The Saints again stayed in the fight and worked their way back.
Madeline O'Brien provided back-to-back kills to put the Saints ahead 23-22. With both teams fighting, the score continued to go back and forth until East Stroudsburg managed a three-point run to take set two 31-29.
Set Three
A kill from
Alex Darby (Huntington, W.V. / Spring Valley) put the Saints ahead 4-3 in the third set, but East Stroudsburg was not deterred. With the game tied at five, ESU went on a four-point run to jump up 9-5.
Eve Musielak (Eden, N.Y. / Eden),
Lauren Scully (Royal Palm Beach, FL / Wellington), and
Isabelle Prentice all provided kills to keep the Saints in the fight, but a six-point run from ESU gave them the 23-10 lead.
Cameron Ulinski delivered the final kill for the Saints before the Warriors took the set 25-11 and the match 3-0.
Top Dog
Madeline O'Brien played well on both sides of the ball in the Saints first match of the day. The Sophomore recorded nine kills and one service ace along with nine digs on the defensive side.
Game Two – Nova Southeastern University 3 vs D'Youville University 1 (25-18, 25-18, 25-13)
Set One
The Sharks jumped out to an early 5-1 lead following a four-point run. The Sharks controlled most of the early play, but the Saints found their footing going on a four-point run to bring the score to 17-10 in the Sharks favor. As the Sharks continued to climb, the Saints slowly chipped away with kills from
Alex Darby,
Lauren Scully, and
Madeline O'Brien and a service ace from
Mitha Hatwar (Columbus, OH / Olentangy Liberty). The Saints reached 18, but the Sharks quickly got the following point to take set one 25-18.
Set Two
The Saints had settled in by the second set of the match and quickly tied the game at eight following kills from
Alex Darby and
Giselle Ramirez (Miami, FL / School for Advanced Studies). The Sharks reclaimed the lead, but the Saints took their shot jumping up 13-12 following a three-point run. Gameplay remained close until the Sharks went on a seven-point run to go up 24-17.
Alex Darby recorded the final kill for the Saints, but the Sharks would go on to win 25-18.
Set Three
The Sharks controlled most of the third set going up 10-3. The Saints slowly chipped away, but the Sharks quickly were up 23-11.
Madeline O'Brien and
Alex Darby recorded the final two kills for the Saints before the Sharks took the third set 25-13 and the match 3-0.
Top Dog:
Alex Darby was a key player for the Saints in their second set of the day. The Graduate Student led the offense with 10 kills and played a major role on defense with nine digs.
